Healthcare systems consist of large and complex services that affect and
get affected by multiple interacting actors, such as doctors, nurses,
patients, citizens, medical suppliers, health insurance providers etc,
with different backgrounds, knowledge, organisational beliefs, interests
and culture. Nowadays, governments and organisations are trying to
improve the quality and productivity of healthcare services, enhance
human welfare, and create stronger forms of democratic government.
Moreover, healthcare actors request electronic access to advanced
services offered by healthcare organisations, including health and
prescription information and knowledge, monitoring management,
appointment scheduling and online communication. In meeting the
aforementioned demands, governments and organisations spend hundreds of
billions of dollars and countless amount of hours on developing
automated intelligent systems that support and enhance healthcare
services and processes. The service orientation relates to significant
new possibilities for developing automated intelligent systems that
support healthcare processes.
However, these efforts have resulted in healthcare systems that have
evolved in a fragmented way. The need to provide an interoperable
environment has become imperative, as the non-integrated nature of the
healthcare systems is strongly associated among others with medical
errors that occur. For instance, hard copy films are constantly lost or
unavailable and information needed for diagnosing is often missing. The
focus of this special issue is to demonstrate how ICT can aid in shaping
the future of healthcare services through empirical and theoretical
research. General academic and professional literatures primarily focus
on using ICT to consolidate and refine healthcare business processes.
Although interesting research is published regularly in this area, it is
clear that new approaches will be key to the future of healthcare
systems, and there is potential for many of these new ideas to arise
from the IS perspective. This special issue is seeking high quality
articles that provide rich and innovative insights on e-health services.
Topics of special interest include (but are not limited to) the
following:

. Development and management of emerging e-health services
. Service Oriented Architectures (SOA)
. Electronic personal healthcare records

services
