MIS Programs in a Constantly Changing Technology Landscape

MIS programs face many challenges. One, the technology landscape is constantly changing. Second, there is a boom or bust in enrollments depending on the current “perception” about job prospects for graduates, whether justified or not. Finally, there is limited awareness of the discipline among prospective undergraduate students. MIS programs in many universities have been shrinking in size since the dotcom bust in early 2001 despite a relatively strong job market for IT professionals, and industry’s constant complaint about the lack of qualified graduates to staff IT positions. Technology cycles affect MIS enrollments profoundly. The Internet provided the boom in MIS enrollments in late 1990s. Now, industry experts are touting cloud computing, analytics, and mobile computing as the next wave of IT advances that will change the world. In recognition of the critical importance of positioning MIS programs to be on top of challenges posed by constantly changing technology, the University of Texas at Dallas, in collaboration with the University of Arizona, Indiana University, University of Maryland, and the University of Minnesota, is organizing an Academic Conference that will examine ways to ensure the sustained viability of the area. The conference is pulling together faculty and program directors from schools that have been on the forefront of developing innovative strategies for recruiting, educating, and placing students to showcase their strategies.
