PhD Scholarship in Social Media Management

Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship within the field of IT Management.

The adoption and use of social media and social software is gaining momentum in businesses worldwide. The real business value of these social computing technologies is that they can be used as enablers for networking, participation, sharing of knowledge and ideas, promotion of discussions, new communication flows, collaboration and co-creation. The right combination of technology, leadership, readiness and culture is expected to provide employees with the opportunity to work in ways that improve and amplify individual as well as collective ideas and contributions. Whereas some of the immediate business opportunities seem obvious, only few understand or investigate the pitfalls and challenges that social media and social software imply for organizations and business leaders. It is also relevant to look into the operational issues and managerial aspects of social media and social software by asking what capabilities, structures or methods are needed for organizations to gain benefits from these technologies.

The PhD scholar is expected to conceptualize the linkages that exist between social computing technologies and the operational issues and managerial challenges that are implied in their adoption, use, and benefit realization in organizational settings. Examples of research topics that the scholarship would cover include, but are not limited to, the following:

1) Design, implement, and evaluate the efficacy and impact of visual analytics solutions based on social computing metrics and key performance indicators for managers in public as well as private sectors.

2) Investigate the operational issues and managerial challenges related to the adoption and use of social media and social software in organizations.

3) Analyze emergent and novel ways of collaboration among employees, partners, customers and prospects through the use of social media and social software to transform the business and drive business results.

The deadline for submitting abstracts/papers for the 43rd SWDSI Conference,
February 29-March 3, 2012 in New Orleans has been extended through October
20, 2011. Submissions should be made at
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=swdsi2012 with a second copy
emailed to drjanetbailey at live.com. Please contact me at
drjanetbailey at live.com if you have problems with the EasyChair website.

Please note that this is the final extension possible for this conference.

Even if you are unable to attend this year yourself, you can still help by
mailing all your friends and colleagues and let them know it is not too late
to submit to one of the best and most economical conferences in our region.

The top student papers will receive monetary awards. In addition,
outstanding papers will be recommended to a number of journal editors for
fast track reviews and possible publication. At the moment we only have 2
student papers - please encourage your students to submit. This is an
excellent conference and group for students to start at.

In addition to competitive papers and abstracts there will be a special
workshop on Phone 7 Development and teaching your students to make money in
the Marketplace. The workshop will be taught by leading Microsoft
professionals. You won't want to miss this opportunity. Please email me
with your desire to attend this workshop as I need to make sure to request a
room large enough for everyone who wants to attend.

There will also be a Graduate Student/New Faculty Workshop and a Not-So-New
Faculty Workshop (well hey, those of us who have been around for a while
want a chance to learn from each other too. J)

The SWDSI 2012 conference website is located at
http://www.swdsi.org/swdsi2012/. Formatting instructions are also located
on the conference site. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate
to contact me.

CSCW Workshop: Reconciling Privacy with Social Media

February 12, 2012

Full Details: http://phitlab.host22.com/cscw2012privacyworkshop.html

Call for Participation

Much research on privacy in social media has focused on limiting personal
information disclosure, increasing control, and perpetuating social
withdrawal. Therefore, privacy goals are often characterized as
diametrically opposed to goals of sharing and connecting via social media.
However, privacy can also be characterized as a broader process where
individuals and groups coordinate social interaction with others. In this
broader conceptualization, privacy behavior moves beyond binary decisions to
withhold or disclose and becomes an interactional process that involves the
cooperation of others in the relationship. The goal of this workshop is to
explore privacy in broader contexts and to understand its relationship to
the benefits of social media and the support of online cooperative
relationships.

The workshop will focus on two main themes: Focusing on the benefits and
outcomes of interactional privacy behaviors in social media environments,
and emphasizing design and evaluation solutions for bringing such benefits
to fruition.

We invite potential workshop participants to submit 2-4 page position papers
that describe research related to the workshop themes. The deadline for
submission is November 25.

Please see the workshop website at
http://phitlab.host22.com/cscw2012privacyworkshop.html for more information.
