*Call for Papers: Special Issue on eHealth*
Policy & Internet <http://www.psocommons.org/policyandinternet>, the first
major peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary journal investigating the impact of
the Internet on public policy, is inviting submissions for a special issue
on eHealth, to be published in May 2012 [submission deadline: 30 November
2011].

The explosive growth of the Internet and its omnipresence in people's daily
lives has facilitated a shift in information seeking on health and has
driven an increase in e-Health initiatives. The Internet is a key
information source for the general public as well as for health
professionals, with e-Health initiatives ranging from Internet-delivered
interventions and therapy focusing on specific behaviours or diseases, to
maintenance of electronic health records.

While numerous efficacy trials have proved that e-Health initiatives can be
effective in promoting health, use of the Internet to support these
initiatives in real-life settings is still very low. Moreover, health
professionals are faced with new challenges, for example, anonymity and
ethical issues and a reshaping of information asymmetries and principal
agent relationships between doctors and patients. Health services such as
therapy are delivered online, because it is known that people feel empowered
to talk about sensitive topics in online settings that provides a degree of
anonymity; this anonymity, however, is a barrier for health insurance
companies funding these initiatives. These issues cannot be solved by
professionals alone, but require policy measures.

To date, there is a lack of evidence-based insight into the issues arising
from the adoption, implementation and maintenance of e-Health initiatives
and societal use of the Internet to tackle health problems. This special
issue of Policy and Internet will make a significant impact in the eHealth
community, drawing together research and perspectives from a range of
academic disciplines, aimed at policymakers, researchers and professionals
in this area. Submissions should shed light on some area of eHealth,
incorporating some combination of new empirical data, methodological
innovation and theoretical development.

The journal is fully multi-disciplinary in scope, and perspectives from any
academic discipline are welcomed, provided that the papers consider the
policy implications of the research discussed, whether general, sectoral,
country-specific or comparative.

Topics we will consider for this special issue include (for example):

   - Adoption, implementation and maintenance of eHealth initiatives
   - Information seeking behaviour on health-related issues
   - Measurement of clinical, business, or social value of Internet-based
   health information
   - Policy measures to stimulate eHealth initiatives, such as public or
   private funding
   - Sectoral or country-specific case studies of eHealth initiatives, or
societal use of online health information
   - Development of health data standards
   - Privacy protection of online health information
   - Promotion of health quality transparency over the Internet
   - Innovation in eHealth provision, for example crowdsourcing and
   user-generated content

Please contact the editors (policyandinternet at oii.ox.ac.uk) if you have any
queries about how your paper might fit in the issue.
