Minitrack: Social, Behavioral and Organizational Issues in Information
Assurance

August 9-12, 2012, Seattle, Washington

Although it is widely recognized that people are often the weakest link
in an information security program, such issues have received relatively
less research attention than technical issues. A lack of attention to
theoretical development in Information Assurance has also been noted. To
address these issues, we propose a mini-track in Social, Behavioral and
Organizational Issues in Information Assurance.

While Information Systems research often assumes employees have only
good intentions; here, there will be opportunity to explore
intentionally negative behaviors. As noted by an earlier call for papers
for a special issue on Information Security in MIS Quarterly, research
on social and behavioral issues in information security is sorely
lacking in well-grounded theory, models, and methods for investigating
topics in this area. While we anticipate that the research in this track
will advance Information Assurance theory, it is highly applicable to
practitioners too, as there have been several notable cases in which the
behavior of insiders had a dramatic impact on organizations.

Suggested Topics:

Although this mini-track is somewhat broadly defined, potential topics
of interest include:

• Methodological topics related to addressing social, behavioral and
organizational issues in Information Security and Assurance
• Theory Development in Information Assurance Research
• Information security in CMC
• The impacts of deception on virtual teams and organizations
• The abuse of trust in virtual teams and organizations
• The impacts of social engineering on organizations
• Trust and assurance in inter-organizational relationships
• Insider threat
• User compliance with organizational security policies and procedures
• Training and Education to improve Information Assurance
• Decision Support for Information Assurance
• Implications of social media use to Information Assurance
