The IEEE Task Force on Process Mining (www.win.tue.nl/ieeetfpm<http://www.win.tue.nl/ieeetfpm>) is organizing a special session at the 2012 IEEE World Congress on Computational Intelligence/ IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation (IEEE CEC/WCCI 2012). The goal of this special session is to join experts in the area of process mining to present new techniques and applications. Therefore, submissions of papers on new process mining techniques, computational intelligence applications of process mining, business intelligence, automated business process discovery, conformance checking, process intelligence, etc., are welcome. Process mining is a relative young research discipline that sits between computational intelligence and data mining on one hand, and process modeling and analysis on the other hand. The idea of process mining is to discover, monitor and improve real processes (not assumed processes) by extracting knowledge from event logs readily available in today's systems. Process mining provides an important bridge between data mining and business process modeling and analysis. Process mining research started in the late nineties. At that time there was little event data available and the process mining techniques were extremely naive and hence unusable. Over the last decade, event data has become readily available and process mining techniques have matured. Moreover, process mining algorithms have been implemented in various academic and commercial systems. Today, there is an active group of researchers working on process mining and it has become one of the "hot topics" in BPM research. Moreover, there is a huge interest from industry in process mining. More and more software vendors started adding process mining functionality to their tools. Furthermore, the diverse range of computational intelligence approaches and methodologies are well suited to approaches combining process mining and other computational intelligence adaptive business systems.
