6th International Workshop on Event-Driven Business Process Management
collocated with BPM 2012
http://icep-edbpm12.fzi.de/
Tallinn, Estonia, September 3rd
The recently coined term <Event-Driven Business Process Management>
(EDBPM) is nowadays an enhancement of BPM by new concepts of Service
Oriented Architecture (SOA), Event Driven Architecture (EDA), Software
as a Service (SaaS), Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) and Complex
Event Processing (CEP). edBPM11 will continue the work of previous edBPM
workshops in exchanging novel ideas, methods, tools and solutions for
the event-driven BPM, with the main goal to connect research and
industry in better understanding what can be done from the research
point of view and what is the need from the industry/business point of
view.
In this context BPM means a software platform which provides companies
the ability to model, manage, and optimize these processes for
significant gain. As an independent system, CEP is a parallel running
platform that analyses and processes events. The BPM- and the
CEP-platform correspond via events which are produced by the
BPM-workflow engine and by the - if distributed - IT services which are
associated with the business process steps. Also events coming from
different event sources in different forms can trigger a business
process or influence the execution of a process or a service, which can
result in another event. Even more, the correlation of these events in a
particular context can be treated as a complex, business level event,
relevant for the execution of other business processes or services. A
business process - arbitrarily fine or coarse grained - can be seen as a
service again and can be "choreographed" with other business processes
or services, even between different enterprises and organizations.
Loosely coupled event-driven architecture for BPM provides significant
benefits:
* Responsiveness. Events can occur at any time from any source and
processes respond to them
immediately, whenever they happen and wherever they happen.
* Agility. New processes can be modeled, implemented, deployed, and
optimized more quickly
in response to changing business requirements.
* Flexibility. Processes can span heterogeneous platforms and
programming languages.
Participating applications can be upgraded or changed without
breaking the process model.
TOPICS
------
Authors are invited to submit novel contributions in the prior described
problem domain.

GRAPHICAL MODELING LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (GMLD12)
Kgs. Lungby, Denmark (at ECMFA 2012)
http://www.dsmforum.org/events/GMLD12
Models play an important role in software development. They not only support communication and understanding, but are increasingly used in automating software development tasks such as code generation, model-based testing, simulation and analysis. While many languages are created for software developers others may be created for business analysts, interaction specialists, test engineers, or persons responsible for product configuration and deployment. Often these languages are domain-specific, created for a narrow application area or for use only inside one company.
This workshop looks at principles of modeling language development, particularly graphical modeling languages for domain-specific needs. We seek contributions that are backed up by experiences on developing modeling languages. We do not focus on tools, but recognize the need for metamodel-based tools, which significantly ease the production of modeling environments. These tools also enable experimentation with the language as it is built, and remove the burden of tool creation and maintenance from the language creator.
The workshop welcomes submissions that address the development of graphical modeling languages. We are looking for submissions that cover all the phases of language development, including definition, testing, evaluation, and maintenance of modeling languages. We also welcome papers that discuss challenges and new trends. Some of the issues that we would like to see addressed in this workshop are experience-based findings on:
- Approaches to identify language concepts
- Tradeoffs between different language structures
- Processes for language definition
- Language structures that minimize the modeling need (and modeling time)
- Keeping models compact, consistent, reusable
- Testing modeling languages
- Creating notations for models, error annotation, different usage situations etc.
- Ways to integrate modeling languages
- Demonstration of modeling languages (and their related tooling, generators etc).

Call for Papers: 18th Americas Conference on Information Systems
(AMCIS), August 9 - 12, 2012, Seattle, Washington
IT Project Management Track (and associated mini-tracks)
18th Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS), August 9 -
12, 2012, Seattle, Washington
Track Information:
Unfortunately, information technology (IT) projects have become
notorious for high failure rates or having significant cost or budget
overruns. Both research and anecdotal evidence suggests that many IT
projects struggle to meet functionality and quality targets. Research
has identified multiple reasons for these challenges in IT projects,
such as: project escalation, poor risk management, failure to manage
user expectations, poor software development or project management
processes, or inability to learn from past mistakes and successes. As
a research community, there is still much to be learned and discussed
about improving success rates for IT projects.
IT Project Management Mini-tracks:
Minitrack 1: IT Project Management in Small Shops: Challenges and Solutions
Minitrack Chairs: Jeffry Babb, Jacob Norbjerg
Description: More than 80% of US software developing companies have
less than 10 employees. Similar numbers apply to other countries and
regions. Yet, we know surprisingly little about the software project
practices and challenges of these companies. The purpose of this
mini-track is to focus on the challenges and practices of small shop
IT project management.
Minitrack 2: The Interaction of Collaborative Information Technologies
and Dynamic Events in Project Management
Minitrack Chairs: Tayfun Keskin, Nazim Taskin
Description: The medium of collaboration is changing as groups rely on
information technologies to share information. Collaborative
information technologies (CITs) have provided an economical
alternative to travel for project members who provide necessary
skills. Early adopter organizations quickly took advantage of
functions of several information processing technologies, from web
conferences to virtual workspaces. Those virtual tools have not
replaced conventional teamwork, but they have had an impact on the
information sharing processes. The mini track solicits research
studies that seek to explore the business role of collaborative
information technologies especially in dynamic project environments.
Minitrack 3: Agile Project Management
Minitrack Chairs: Meghann Drury, Orla McHugh
Description: Agile methodologies were developed in response to
frustrations with traditional software development methodologies and
the management of software development projects. As organizations
increasingly continue to adopt agile methodologies, a number of
challenges have emerged in relation to agile project management (APM).
For example, agile software development (ASD) teams work largely on
their own and manage their own workload, which is a cultural shift for
managers, developers, and customers alike. Managers must relinquish
control to the team and avoid the imposition of too many formal
controls or too much structure, which may result in unintended
consequences. This dramatic change provides challenges for advocates
of agile methodologies who can find it difficult to obtain management
support for implementing agile methodologies. Empirical research in
agile methodologies is continuously growing. Yet, little research
exists on the management of ASD teams as agile methodologies imply
there is no need for a project manager. However, ASD teams require
leadership and a different approach to project management. Therefore,
we are seeking high quality research papers that investigate various
aspects of agile project management.
Minitrack 4: General Topics in IT Project Management
Minitrack Chairs: Stacie Petter, Hazel Taylor
Description: Project-based work structures have become the norm within
a number of industries, including the Information Technology (IT)
sector, and these structures present new challenges for managers and
researchers. For project managers in the wider arena, particularly in
construction and engineering, such project-based work structures still
operate within a clear overall management structure, with project
teams that are likely to remain the same from project to project,
working on projects that are relatively well-defined and with a high
degree of repeatability. In contrast, the IT sector is characterized
by rapidly changing technology and contexts of application. Project
managers typically face new, diverse, and ill-defined requirements for
each project, and must manage their projects in rapidly changing
conditions and under high time pressure. In addition, IT project
managers usually work within a poorly defined management structure.
Therefore, they must gain the support and commitment, without direct
position power, of a loosely aggregated set of team members who often
change from project to project, and even from stage to stage, within a
project. Increasingly in IT projects, team members are also
geographically distributed, presenting yet another set of challenges
for their project managers. As a result, while the project management
profession has seen considerable performance improvements in the last
fifty years, IT projects have been reported as having a track record
of poor performance. This has occurred even though proven best
practices from the wider sector have been applied in the IT arena.
Minitrack 5: Management of IT Outsourcing Projects in a Global Economy
Minitrack Chairs: Jahyun Goo, Matthew Swinarski
Description: While academics and practitioners alike suggest that
relationship management is a crucial factor in the overall success or
failure of an IT outsourcing project, managing outsourcing
relationship becomes a daunting task as the traditional IT outsourcing
projects (application development, database development, etc.) has
developed into a highly specialized marketplace of IT-enabled service
projects such as business process outsourcing (BPO), knowledge process
outsourcing (KPO), etc. over the last decade. The phenomenon of
significant, sustained trend of IT project globalization, has led to
the fact that researchers in many disciplines are reframing and
refocusing their efforts around project management that explore
whether findings in one context hold true in another. Along this line,
a recent report by Gartner points out that many firms have failed to
build a skills base to meet the challenge of managing their new
outsourcing environment and are therefore at risk of a low return on
service value. Therefore, this mini?track invites research articles
that focus on social, managerial and knowledge-related topics in IS
outsourcing/offshoring project management, which we believe lead to a
pathway to the success of IT project. With papers that are both
conceptual and empirically based, we seek to contribute to theory
building by both reapplying existing frameworks and developing new
constructs that help explaining the project t management view of IT
outsourcing relationship in general, and offshoring arrangements in
particular.
Minitrack 6: Adoption, Diffusion and Success of IT Project Management
Methodologies
Minitrack Chairs: Kunal Mohan, Nils Urbach, Anol Bhattacherjee
Description: The objective of this min-track is to foster research on
ITPM methodologies by providing deeper insights into factors that
affect their successful design, adoption, diffusion, and application.
Researchers and practitioners interested in submitting papers for this
mini-track are encouraged to explore ITPM methodologies, and related
methods and tools ? for example from a design or behavioral
perspective. Papers may consider different units of analysis:
individual, group, or organizational level.
Minitrack 7: Project Management Education
Minitrack Chairs: Michael Cuellar
Description: Learning to be a project manager in the information
systems world is often an informal process. Many times IS
professionals have become project managers on the basis of broad
project experience and technical expertise rather than systematic
training. The informal nature of project management training resulted
in project managers not possessing all the skills they should have to
be successful. Academia has attempted to address this gap by the
development of project management courses. While this has been a
welcome addition to the project of the information systems student, a
number of questions arise regarding this effort. The purpose of this
mini-track then is to provide a forum to exchange ideas and experience
in these areas. Participants in this mini-track should receive
practical advice on how to address these areas and take away ideas on
how to improve their courses and curricula.
Submission Guidelines and Important Dates:

Learning Management Systems and Learning 2.0
Alexandros Soumplis, Hellenic Open University, Greece
Eleni Koulocheri, Hellenic Open University, Greece
Nektarios Kostaras, Hellenic Open University, Greece
Nikos Karousos, Hellenic Open University, Greece
Michalis Xenos, Hellenic Open University, Greece
The unprecedented growth of Web 2.0 has affected learning and has made the growth of learning networks possible. Learning networks are shaped by communities to help their members acquire knowledge in specific areas and are the most notable feature of Learning 2.0, the new learning era that focuses on individual learning needs. The evolution of learning forces traditional Learning Management Systems (LMS) to incorporate more Web 2.0 features and slowly transform to Personal Learning Environments (PLEs). A Personal Learning Environment is a loosely structured collection of tools with strong social networking characteristics, which gives users the ability to create, maintain, and redistribute their own learning content. This paper is a field study of the most well-known and established LMSs and their support for specific features within several categories of tools of Web 2.0. The incorporation of Web 2.0 features within those LMSs differentiates them regarding their ability and!
potential to be used as PLEs.

PAPER TWO
Exploring the Influence of Affiliation Motivation in the Effectiveness of Web-Based Courses
Maur?cio Gregianin Testa, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Brazil
Edimara Mezzomo Luciano, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Brazil
Students are considered the central element of any learning process. This article examines one specific characteristic of students in Web-based courses: their affiliation motivation. The objective is to explore the influence of affiliation motivation on students in the effectiveness of Web-based courses. The authors conducted a case study of a Brazilian Web-based course. Six different data collection strategies were used: open and semi-structured interviews, direct observations, record and document analyses, and a structured survey. The results show the significant influence of three main constructs related to affiliation motivation (attention, positive stimulation, and emotional support) in four dimensions related to students: (1) their satisfaction, (2) their perceptions of course results and quality, (3) their perceptions of the effectiveness of Web-based courses compared with that of on-site courses, and (4) their perceptions regarding the advantages and disadvantages of!
Web-based courses.

PAPER THREE
Design and Evaluation of a Web-Based Tool for Teaching Computer Network Design to Undergraduates
Nurul I. Sarkar, Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand
Krassie Petrova ,Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand
Previous studies have shown that motivating students to learn about local area network (LAN) design can be difficult when presented in the traditional lecture format. To overcome this problem, a Web-based tool (?WebLan-Designer?) was developed as an aid in teaching and learning of LAN design at the introductory level. A WebLan-Designer provides a set of learning resources (tutorials, quizzes, network modeling, network design scenarios, key terms and definitions, and review questions and answers) and assists undergraduate students in learning the basics of both wired and wireless LAN design. The tool is Internet-based and can be accessed at any time so that students can study LAN design at their own pace and convenience. This flexible learning approach contributes positively to distance education and e-learning. The effectiveness of WebLan-Designer is evaluated both formally and informally; positive student and peer feedback indicates that the design and implementation of the!
tool has been successful and that using WebLan-Designer may have a positive impact on student learning and comprehension.

An international workshop for IS scholars interested in one or more of the following related issues:
? design science research
? theorizing the IT artefact
? action research and other intervention strategies
? theorizing practices and work-systems
? the use of action-oriented theories in IS
? practice relevance and usefulness of IS research
? researcher-practitioner collaboration
? engaged scholarship
? practice research
? pragmatist epistemology
There is a growing interest in IS research for research strategies aiming for design and change. This can be pursued through design science research (Hevner et al, 2004), action research (Davison et al, 2004) or combinations thereof (Sein et al, 2011). Accompanying an interest for the design of IT artefacts is a quest for theorizing the IT artefact (Orlikowski & Iacono, 2001). Improved understanding of IT artefacts is needed in relation to their design, use and evolution. An improved understanding of the context of IT artefacts is needed as well. There is growing interest to theorize the context as practices (Feldman & Orlikowski, 2011; Goldkuhl, 2011) or work-systems (Alter, 2006). This includes an interest for the combined social and material characters of such practices (Orlikowski & Scott, 2008).
The interest for design and change follows the claim for relevance and usefulness of IS research (Benbasat & Zmud, 1999) and the importance of researcher-practitioner collaboration (Mathiassen, 2002). This kind of research orientation have been giving different labels like e.g. engaged scholarship (Van de Ven, 2007; Mathiassen & Nielsen, 2008), mode 2 knowledge production (Nowotny et al, 2001), practice research (Mathiassen, 2002; Goldkuhl, 2011) or practical science (Gregor, 2008). Pivotal in this search for more relevant and useful research is the articulation of supportive, prescriptive and normative knowledge. This can take the form of design theory (Gregor & Jones, 2007) or the broader notion of practical theory (Cronen, 2001; Goldkuhl, 2007).
In order to bring these different threads together we must turn to pragmatist epistemology. There is a re-introduction of pragmatism as a viable research paradigm in some social sciences (Wicks & Freeman, 1998; Fishman, 1999) including information systems (Goles & Hirschheim, 2000; ?gerfalk, 2010; Goldkuhl, 2012) as manifested by the formation of the AIS Special Interest Group on Pragmatist IS Research (SIGPRag) in 2008 (www.sigprag.org). The pragmatist foundations of design science research (Lee & Nickerson, 2010) and action research (Baskerville & Myers, 2004) have also been acknowledged.
Pragmatist epistemology joins together the different threads described above:
? Knowledge in the making
? Relevant and useful knowledge
? Knowledge of actions and practices
The purpose of this workshop is to bring together scholars interested in one or more of these pragmatist threads. This is done in order to weave a pragmatist web to be more powerful in its knowledge generation and use. Theoretical reflections and concrete examples are demanded!

Dear Colleagues
We would like to invite you to submit your papers to forthcoming Transforming Government (tGov) Workshop, organised and held at Brunel University on May 8th and 9th 2012. The tGov workshop brings together both local and international researchers and practitioners to participate in sharing ideas for the transformation of government through enabling electronic systems and processes. It includes a full program of papers, presentations and keynote speakers. Quality contributions will be double blind peer reviewed, for refereed proceedings which will be published online.
Introduction:
E-Government is a trend that is highly driven by the advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the public services demanded by its stakeholders. The international popularity of the topic of e-Government has led to various studies being conducted across countries assessing the on-going developments, the readiness and the impact of e-Government by the research community. E-government implementation efforts have now evolved from basic information provisioning to more integrated and joined up service offerings in most developed countries as well as the developing regions. Having successfully implemented a number of transaction-based e-services by e-enabling front office and customer facing processes, most developed and developing countries have directed their efforts towards realising transformational government (or t-Government). The transformational phase is considered the highest level of maturity for e-Government programmes and encompasses redefining t!
he delivery of government services by providing a single point of contact to citizens' that makes the government transparent. Moreover, as citizens have become more technology and internet-savvy and experience more efficient e-services from the private sector, they now expect better targeted, more responsive and equally efficient services from public sector organisations. The application of the Internet has been recognised as a key facilitator in providing enhanced public services to citizens. In the past, conventional electronic communications such as discussion forums were examples of early forms of e-Democracy which now reflect the idea behind Web 2.0. However, the development of citizen-centred e-Government has been fairly sluggish globally due to hesitancy by key players in the public sector to take the decisive step from a representative system of government towards participatory and direct democracy.
Terms such as "Government 2.0" and "eGov. 2.0" have been used to describe a new government paradigm which challenges the traditional governments and governance by incorporating Web 2.0 fundamentals in e-Government environments. In this respect, the research community has asserted that the recent explosion of these Web 2.0 technologies have the potential to create real transformative opportunities in relation to key issues of transparency, accountability, communication and collaboration and to promote civic engagement in the public sector. Although the literature explores how governments may leverage Web 2.0 mainly for communication, collaboration and information dissemination, the normative literature is sparse regarding the impact of Web 2.0 on e-Government in UK. The rapid adoption of these technologies by citizens has meant that the governments have gradually started to use the sites to reach these online audiences, but there still appears to be little consistent organise!
d effort. This is because public sector transformation is a massive and complex undertaking involving distributed decision-making that requires a good understanding and evaluation of the political context, business processes and technology.
On the other hand, from a demand perspective extensive efforts are required to increase citizens' awareness about the transformation of the delivery of government services and their online availability which would result in increased e-participation. In order to prevent digital divide in terms of using electronic government services, it is also necessary that citizens from all facets of society are equipped with basic ICT skills as well as private and or public access to high-speed internet connections. Yet, despite the availability of innovative technologies, government agencies are faced with many technical, organisational, and socio-economic challenges and barriers that need to be addressed when developing, adopting and diffusing electronic government systems and services. Furthermore, from an organisational perspective t-Government has introduced an environment where most public institutions such as healthcare, social services, education and employment have struggled wit!
h the need to balance issues such as transparency and opaqueness, or social inclusion and professionalism. Consequently, there has been increasing pressure on the academic and practitioner communities for research that focuses on bridging the gap between t-Government theory and practice. The aim of this workshop is to provide a common platform for academics and practitioners to discuss and present original research highlighting issues related with technological, organisational, managerial and socioeconomic aspects of both (e) and (t)-government adoption and implementation.
Coverage:
To ensure that the workshop has the most comprehensive current and relevant coverage of all topics related to transformational government, we are inviting researchers and leading experts in their particular areas of research to contribute papers of 6000-7000 words that offer an in-depth discussion of the key issues, concepts and trends related to the field of transformational government. All manuscripts should be formatted according to the template available on http://www.tgovworkshops.org/).

information systems to meet the need for increased collaboration,
participation and service demands from users and citizens. While the
emergence and diffusion of new developments in IT innovations (e.g.
social media, open source software, cloud computing as well as
crowd-sourcing and open innovation platforms) provide a unique window of
opportunity to meet these demands, it also concurrently presents new
challenges to practitioners and new areas of research for researchers.
As the Pacific Asia region is among the most technologically savvy in
the world, it will be interesting to see how these innovative approaches
in e-government are being implemented. Hence, this track invites
submissions of high quality papers that address various aspects of
innovation in e-government research, using a diverse set of
methodologies and theoretical approaches.
Possible topics include (but are not limited to) the following areas:
- Citizen-centric e-government;
- Cloud computing in e-government;
- Crowd-sourcing in e-government;

Social media technologies have the potential to change important communication processes within organizations.
As social media proliferate, it seems likely that organizational members will use them to carry out socialization,
identification, collaboration, innovation, relationship development, persuasion, learning, social capital formation,
and knowledge sharing processes. The explosive growth of these technologies has not gone unnoticed bycommunication and information scholars, as evidenced by the equally rapid growth in articles related to the uses
and impacts of social media, including a prior special issue on social network sites here in JCMC (vol. 13, no. 1,
2007). Much of this prior work has been conducted among student populations or in the context of advertising andmarketing, and, as such, has not focused on social media use in organizations. Studies that do take theorganization into account, generally relate to such fields as information systems marketing, and strategicmanagement, with the aim of understanding how social media can be leveraged to enhance business
performance. Less well studied, however, is the influence of social media on a range of organizationalcommunication processes within workplace contexts.
Focus of the Special Issue:
We invite submissions to a special issue of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication focusing onresearch on social media within the organizational context. Our aim is to highlight research that explores how the
affordances of social media interact with organizational contexts, behaviors, and communicationpractices to influence processes of interest to organizational scholars.
We are interested in submissions that enable us to better understand how social media affordances make a
difference in workplace settings. Affordances are the result of the intertwining of capabilities provided by thetechnologies and the actions taken by the actors using them. Papers are especially welcome that integrate thematerial aspects of the technology with its use in organizational communication processes. Submissions that
focus on such topics as the role of social media in attracting customers or influencing sales will be given lesspriority as these topics are extensively covered in other outlets.
We are intentionally not providing a definition of social media in this call for papers, but ask authors to do so withintheir manuscripts. We encourage authors to be explicit about what it is about the media they are studying that
makes them "social" and to provide definitions that are robust enough to endure over time.
We encourage diverse methodological approaches, including both qualitative and quantitative studies. Conceptualpapers as well as empirical studies are welcome. All papers must be theoretically motivated.
Submission Process and Author Guidelines:
Papers will undergo an initial screening by the three special issue editors in an accelerated review process. A setof selected papers will then be invited for submission to the JCMC system and will undergo a formal review led bythe special issue editors in conjunction with JCMC reviewers.
Submissions should follow JCMC formatting guidelines available at the journal site
(http://www.wiley.com/bw/submit.asp?ref=1083-6101) and should be sent via email to the special issue editors by
February 1, 2012. Initial screening decisions will be completed by March 15, 2012, and selected papers must besubmitted to the JCMC system at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jcmc by April 15, 2012. Final acceptance
decisions will be completed by July 15, 2012.
