CfP: AMCIS 2012 - Minitrack on Business Intelligence for Non-profit
Organizations and Social Enterprises

CALL FOR PAPERS
AMCIS 2012
Seattle, Washington
August 9-12, 2012

Track: Decision Support, Data Management Systems, Knowledge Management, and
Business Intelligence (SIGDSS)

MINI-TRACK TITLE: BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE FOR NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND
SOCIAL ENTERPRISES

Non-profit organizations and Social Enterprises differ from for-profit
organizations in many ways. Most importantly, they are value-driven, rather
than profit-driven. They are a key feature in many societies and cover most
areas of society’s activities.

Though some non-profit organizations make good use of Information
Technology, strategic application is generally under-exploited. Nonprofits
often struggle with prioritizing IT-spending, as they are usually expected
to minimize support cost to maximize using funds for activities directly
contributing to their cause. Social Enterprises have more scope and freedom
to optimize IT use.

Application of Business Intelligence tools and techniques, particularly in
the context of (Strategic) Performance Management, can be very beneficial
to non-profit organization. It can, for example, help with profiling
clients and risks, allocating resources and prioritizing of action,
managing campaigns, and supporting cross-agency working. Nonprofits also
increasingly need to show donors and potential donors how funds have
benefited the causes they wish to support. BI can play an important part in
such analyses. Outcomes (benefits) are generally difficult to measure,
multi-facetted, and achieved by contributions from many players, so data
from various sources is usually needed. The ‘open data’ movement, here, is
therefore a direct contributor to making BI more attractive to non-profit
organizations.

Increased understanding of the particular needs of and benefits for
nonprofits’ BI use would enable more efficient and effective use of donated
funds and thus enhanced societal gains. As for-profit organizations
increasingly have a need to report on social and environmental issues,
integrated with traditional financial reporting, research in this area
would also benefit them.

POTENTIAL MINI-TRACK TOPICS
· Case studies of BI use in non-profit organisations and social
enterprises.
· Critical perspectives on use of BI in nonprofits: are they
becoming too much like profit organisations, or does it help them to fulfil
their mission.
· Using multiple data sources, including open data, for BI in
nonprofits: risks, benefits, approaches.
· Sociotechnical, sociomaterial, structuration and other
theoretical perspectives on BI use in non-profit organisations and social
enterprises.
