HICSS 46: Knowledge Management in an Era of New Social Media: Risks and
Opportunities
Members of the "net generation" have grown up comfortable with digital
networks and the social interactions such media have afforded. These
NetGeners and others who have embraced the new social media services such as
Twitter and Facebook use these and similar platforms to form and maintain
communities of interest and even communities of practice, crossing
organizational and political boundaries.
As the use of these technologies become more prevalent in the workplace,
organizations experience tensions because the use of social networking and
social media challenge the typical organizational structure and
relationships. The challenge is for executives to find ways to mobilize the
creativity and energy of those who embrace these technologies but still
enable the organization to protect its proprietary knowledge.
Topics in this mini-track can include:
a. Detailed case studies of how organizations manage the tension
arising from the use of social media in the workplace
b. Detailed case studies of how organizations are benefiting from
social media and how they are managing the design and control of
applications that use social media
c. Economic analyses of the costs and benefits of social media to firms
and organizations
d. Ethical and legal aspects of using social media as part of an
overall knowledge management strategy
e. How crowdsourcing and other applications of social media are used in
innovation and new knowledge development
f. Implications for knowledge security at the organizational level by
the increasing use of social media and social networking services
g. Risk management strategies for knowledge managers who want to use
social media to benefit their organizations
Papers solicited for this mini-track cover issues, challenges, ideas, and
solutions for managing knowledge in an era of social media. The use of
social media (SM) presents both risks and opportunities for knowledge
management (KM) and systems. On the one hand, SM offers unprecedented
opportunities for sharing information and knowledge both among colleagues
closely bound by shared interests but also among those representing the
"strength of weak ties" (Granovetter, 1973). On the other hand, SM, because
of the ease with which information can be disseminated, threatens
organizational control of information and increases the risk of the loss of
intellectual property and proprietary knowledge. For this track, we
encourage authors from academia, industry, governments, and non-profits,
especially collaborations among these groups to address the tension between
both these aspects of KM and SM. We solicit early stage concepts, case
studies, works-in-progress, and collaborative action research among
academics, executives, and policy makers that illustrate innovative
approaches and solutions. We especially seek papers that offer
theoretically-based empirical research (either qualitative or quantitative).
