Dear IS Colleagues,

http://www.palgrave-journals.com/ejis/index.html

In the seventh article 'Online game addiction among adolescents:
motivation and prevention factors', the authors Zhengchuan Xu from Fudan
University in Shanghai, China, Ofir Turel from California State University
and Yufei Yuan from McMaster University in Canada propose a model of
antecedent factors influencing online game addiction. The antecedents not
only rely on motivating factors that lead to game playing addiction, but
also take into consideration prevention and harm reduction efforts exerted
to reduce online game addiction. The motivating factors and functional
needs include: relationship, escapism, mechanics, and advancement. In
contrast, the prevention and harm reduction factors include attention
switching, dissuasion, rationalization/education, parental monitoring,
resource restriction, and perceived cost. The model is tested on some 623
adolescents in China and shows 40% of explanatory power of game addiction
behaviour. This study provides guidelines for society to develop more
effective ways to reduce the levels of addiction to some applications
among adolescents. The practical implications are therefore of prime
importance since it can help teachers, parents, governments, and
regulators control and prevent online game addiction which has been
established to cause harm on both physical and psychological level to
those involved in this activity as well as to their surrounding
communities.
