PhD studentship at Loughborough School of Business and Economics
Topic: Knowledge Re-Integration in Strategic Back-sourcing – International Business, Strategy and Innovation

Whereas the last decade was characterized by an enormous attention to the competitive implications of outsourcing or offshore outsourcing, little academic and managerial interest was given to the reverse process of back-sourcing. While outsourcing implies a disaggregation of the value chain, back-sourcing means value chain re-aggregation through the execution of related activities in-house. However, back-sourcing poses challenges to client firms in the form of re-integrating once outsourced activities into the firm’s value chain and re-building lost capabilities. Client and vendor organizations might have developed incompatible codes, routines and protocols over time, which would impede such a re-integration process. In view of this, this PhD research project seeks to advance our understanding of the back-sourcing phenomenon from a knowledge re-integration perspective. Because of the newness of the phenomenon and the paucity of prior research, this project offers exciting opportunities to make significant scientific contributions by developing insights into the strategic, operational and social barriers to re-integrating and re-building capabilities within the firm and the performance consequences thereof.

£13,590 per year for three years, plus fees payable at the home/EU rate.
