The Search for Survival: Lessons from Disruptive Technologies is now
available at Amazon and other outlets.

The book presents a model of survival for incumbent firms faced with a
disruptive technology, and illustrates the model with examples from
individual companies and entire industries. Companies that have failed to
survive include Kodak and Blockbuster, while the New York Stock Exchange
used technology for many years to try and maintain the status quo when
faced with electronic markets and trading. Industries that are struggling
include print newspapers, recorded music, video content, publishing, and
one of the slowest industries to change, higher education. The book looks
at technologies that facilitate risky business and at how hard social media
have been on dictators of small countries. It explores the plight of the
USPS as it loses out to FedEx and UPS. There are a few tales of survivors
who have managed to adapt to disruptive technologies and flourish, at least
for now. The last chapter reviews the evidence and suggests some
strategies for survival.
