Background:
===========
The workshop concentrates on research problems related to learning 
analytics and attempts to bring researchers and practitioners together 
discussing and sharing advanced ideas and preliminary results in 
learning analytics research.

Higher education, a field that gathers an enormous amount of data about 
learners has traditionally been inefficient in its data use, often 
operating with substantial delays in analysing readily available data. 
Organisational processes such as planning and resource allocation often 
fail to utilize the available data on effective learning practices, 
student profiles, and required interventions. The increasing impact of 
analytics and data based decision making on other fields provides 
support for the application of these methods in education. Analytics 
provides a new model for educators and leaders in education to improve 
decision making about the teaching and learning process. Growing 
interest in big data and analytics in education, teaching, and learning 
provides the motivation for more research into the models, methods, 
technologies, and impact of analytics. A research community, Learning 
Analytics and Knowledge (LAK) has developed to address this need as well 
as the related research community, Educational Data Mining (EDM). This 
workshop provides a space for communication and collaboration between 
these communities in order to share research, methods, and tools for 
analytics and data mining and in the service of developing both LAK and 
EDM fields.

The international workshop on learning analytics design and systems 
seeks submissions describing advanced ideas and preliminary results, 
including applied and basic research papers, as well as case studies and 
experiences that address various aspects of learning analytics. Areas of

• Learning Analytics and Process Mining
• Standardisation and Interoperability
• Tools and Best Practices in Learning Analytics

Submission and selection process:
=================================
Submissions must be original, and not submitted to, or accepted by, any 
conference or journal. All submitted papers will be reviewed and 
selected by an international program committee. Selection criteria 
include relevance for the LADS workshop, importance of topic, 
originality of work, presentation and contribution to theory or practice.


Proceedings:
============
Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings, which 
will be available at the workshop. Selected papers from the workshop 
will be published in a special issue of an international journal (e.g. 
the Journal of Information Technology Education).
