Dear Colleagues

Is anyone aware of any recent empirical studies/reports white papers assessing existing telecommunications infrastructure in rural/regional areas???

In particular I am looking for previous research/literature which has critically assessed the capacity, geographical reach and digital services provision of specific telecommunication technologies such as:

# Wired - Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN also known as POTS) , Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL utilises PSTN infrastructure),

# Wireless - 2G,3G, 4G (mobile cellular networks), and Satellite

# and the digital services that these different types of telecommunications can provide when accessing the Internet

Above is part of a government funded larger study which I am involved that is looking at the digital futures of rural and regional communities in Australia http://www.usq.edu.au/research/usq/dfcrn (Project 2) and

we would be very happy for both national and international collaboration in this area of research for any interested parties

Australia is currently undergoing a transformation of its telecommunications infrastructure with a phased rollout of the National Broadband Network (this is one of the largest infrastructure investments in the history of Australia) (http://www.nbnco.com.au/nbn-for-home/how-it-works.html?icid=pub:hme:about-nbn:hro:img) across the entire country

with fibre optic to the household in densely populated areas and fixed wireless and satellite to regional rural and remote areas that are less densely populated

As per the etiquette of AIS World, all useful replies will be summarised and posted on AIS World Listserver

Kind regards Michael
