Call for Participation: AMCIS 2013 Workshops/Tutorials on Thursday, August 15, 2013

AMCIS 2013 is just around the corner! AMCIS registration is now open and the early registration is available till June 19, 2013.

We invite you to register for the pre-conference workshops/tutorials.

Four pre-conference workshops/tutorials are available at AMCIS 2013. They will take place on Thursday, August 15, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A brief description of the four workshops/tutorials is provided below:

1. "Intro to using R for Multiple Regression and Structural Equation Modeling" by Hamed Qahri Saremi<javascript:popUp('contact.cgi?popup=yes&window=contact&context=amcis2013_workshops&u=1365272&article=1010&for=editor')> (McMaster University) and Ofir Turel<javascript:popUp('contact.cgi?popup=yes&window=contact&context=amcis2013_workshops&u=1124210&article=1010&for=editor')> (California State University, Fullerton)

This half-day tutorial offers an introductory training in R for statistical analysis in IS research. R is a free open-source software environment that provides a wide variety of statistical and graphical techniques, including multiple regression and structural equation modeling (SEM). The purpose of this tutorial is to introduce R environment and demonstrate how to use it for two popular statistical techniques in IS research: multiple regression and SEM.

2. "A Method for Gamification in the Enterprise" by Basanth Kumar Neeli<javascript:popUp('contact.cgi?popup=yes&window=contact&context=amcis2013_workshops&u=1797459&article=1009&for=editor')> (Infosys Limited)

Gamification is the use of game design elements in non-game contexts to raise engagement and motivation levels of users. Implementing sustainable Gamification initiatives involves understanding the challenges and motivations of users, and applying Gamification patterns and game mechanics in the context of the objectives for the initiatives. The process of Gamification can be complex and we have proposed a method to guide the designers and developers to implement sustainable Gamification initiatives. The workshop plans to involve and walk the participants through the method to design a gamified environment for a topic decided by the participants.

3. "Geographic Information Systems" by James B. Pick<javascript:popUp('contact.cgi?popup=yes&window=contact&context=amcis2013_workshops&u=1046543&article=1007&for=editor')> (University of Redlands), Avijit Sarkar<javascript:popUp('contact.cgi?popup=yes&window=contact&context=amcis2013_workshops&u=1732521&article=1007&for=editor')> (University of Redlands), Hindupur Ramakrishna<javascript:popUp('contact.cgi?popup=yes&window=contact&context=amcis2013_workshops&u=1755303&article=1007&for=editor')> (University of Redlands), Dan Farkas<javascript:popUp('contact.cgi?popup=yes&window=contact&context=amcis2013_workshops&u=1800002&article=1007&for=editor')> (Pace University), and Namchul Shin<javascript:popUp('contact.cgi?popup=yes&window=contact&context=amcis2013_workshops&u=1160361&article=1007&for=editor')> (Pace University)

The objective of this workshop is to introduce IS/IT faculty and students to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as an emerging area of importance in IS/IT teaching, research, and curricula. The workshop will justify the case of relevance of GIS and spatial analysis for IS/IT academics and provide a comprehensive overview of GIS concepts, methods, architecture, and applications. It will explain why and how GIS and spatial analysis are relevant for IS curricula and teaching, and will demonstrate their relevance to IS research.

4. "Best Practices in Teaching Service Oriented Architecture with Web Services" by Vic Matta<javascript:popUp('contact.cgi?popup=yes&window=contact&context=amcis2013_workshops&u=1157286&article=1003&for=editor')> (Ohio University)

Teaching interoperability between disparate systems using web services can be difficult due to challenges of creating multiple interconnected systems in a classroom. This tutorial presents a complete solution to this problem by covering the topic from a basic introduction of the SOA concepts with web services to a full-scale hands-on deployment of a classroom project along with guidelines for a course package using C#.ASPNET. Opportunities will also be given to participants to share experiences and best practices in teaching this course.
