1. Measuring and Monitoring Benefits Realized from IT-Enabled Change
Deadline: 21st June 2013

Supervisory team: Dr Crispin Coombs, Senior Lecturer in Information Systems and Professor Neil Doherty, Professor of Information Systems

Project details: Information System and Information Technology (IS/IT) evaluations frequently reveal that organizations are failing to achieve the intended benefits from their IS/IT investments. It is argued that most benefits from IS/IT come from changes in the way an organization does business and not from the introduction of the new technology itself. However, it is difficult to pro-actively manage the process of benefit realization management without effective measuring and monitoring techniques. Therefore, the absence of suitable measurement tools may explain the poor management of IS/IT enabled benefits in organizations. Against this background, the aim of this study is to identify and critique the measures currently adopted by industry and examine the application of benefits measurement techniques at the process and project level and how these methods can be used to inform adjustive action and regular monitoring of benefit realization from IT projects. The study would be valuable for both academics and practitioners, as it will help to bridge the theory-practice gap in benefits management techniques and increase the likelihood of realizing business benefits from expensive IS/IT investments.

2. Lean in Public Services: Capturing the Benefits
Deadline: 21st June 2013

Supervisory team: Professor Zoe Radnor, Professor of Service Operations Management, Dr Nicola Bateman, Senior Lecturer in Operations Management, Dr Crispin Coombs, Senior Lecturer in Information Systems

Project details: This study aims to explore the effective application of process improvement (PI) in public services, with a particular focus on the relationship between performance measurement and Lean, in order to determine approaches for benefits realisation. The outcome of this studentship will be a benefits realisation framework to capture the tangible and intangible benefits of the investment into process improvement. With the level of investment in process improvement through methodologies such as Lean reaching millions of pounds (NAO, 2010) the need for public sector organisations to not only capture the benefits for accountability and transparency, but also to support the direction of travel has been clearly acknowledged (Radnor, 2010). The study is part funded by a healthcare organisation which will be one of the case study organisation.

Both Studentships are open to home/EU and international/overseas students. They will run for 3 years and include:

A stipend of £13,726 p.a. plus fees paid at the home/EU rate for three years.
Please note that international/overseas students will be required to find funding to cover the difference between home/EU fees.
