Assistant Professor of Health Information Technology
Integrated Information Technology
University of South Carolina

The Integrated Information Technology program at the University of South
Carolina invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track Assistant
Professor in health information technology.

The successful candidate will join the faculty of USC?s Masters in Health
Information Technology (MHIT), an interdisciplinary program with the Arnold
School of Public Health. The position will support a new initiative to
develop an online delivery option for the MHIT. Online as well as
traditional classroom teaching, collaborative research, and grant writing
related to health IT will be expected. The expanding Integrated Information
Technology program is actively involved with the regional business and
healthcare communities through IT-oLogy
(www.IT-ology.org<http://www.it-ology.org/>
and www.hrsm.sc.edu/iit/ ) as well as Health Sciences South Carolina (
www.healthsciencessc.org).

An earned doctorate in information technology or related discipline is
required. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of both
information technology and the healthcare environment and a demonstrated
potential for research and high scholarly impact at the intersection of
these two disciplines. Candidates should possess strong commitment to
teaching, interdisciplinary research, and cultural diversity. Special
consideration will be given to applicants with experience in online
teaching, grant writing/external funding and/or IT responsibilities in
health organizations.

The University of South Carolina's main campus is located in the capital
city of Columbia, and is close to mountains and the coast. It is ranked by
the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as an institution
of "very high research activity." With approximately 30,000 students, 350
degree programs, and a nationally-ranked library system, the university is
often considered to be one of the most beautiful campuses in an urban
setting, with a population of over 650,000 in the greater metropolitan area.

The review of applications will begin May 15, 2013 and will continue until
the position is filled. The expected start date is August 16, 2013. To view
full job description, requirements, and apply, go to:
uscjobs.sc.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=71495. The requisition number
for this position is 006153.

For questions or additional information, contact Dr. Neset Hikmet, Search
Committee Chair, at: nhikmet at sc.edu or 803-777-5559.

The University of South Carolina is an affirmative action, equal
opportunity employer. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply. The
University of South Carolina is responsive to the needs of dual career
couples.

> Edited by Luis Luna-Reyes, Sehl Mellouli and John Bertot, this issue
> presents papers from the 2012 conference of the Digital Government Society
> of North America<
> https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1371116280-258e3aa2943976b80cf59037e7a148e8-f064ee6?pa=457474936015334551
> >.
> The issue is a 'must-read' for scholars and practitioners concerned to
> understand project implementation in forms of digital government. To
> explain this point let me quote from the editors of this edition:
> "Digital government projects and initiatives are complex endeavors.
> Technology by itself is a source of complexity, as its impacts, benefits
> and limitations are not always fully understood by project leaders or
> researchers. This is particularly the case when the implemented technology
> is not yet widely adopted. Moreover, digital government projects regularly
> involve the participation of a wide range of diverse stakeholders both in
> public and private organizations who need to reach agreement on project
> goals, objectives, and means. Further, project goals and activities are
> usually constrained by institutional arrangements such as laws and
> regulations, and several context-related factors such as specific economic
> situations, demographic conditions, or broader social technology adoption
> and access.
> Given this complexity, it is not uncommon that digital government projects
> are abandoned before completion or fail delivering the expected benefits.
> Some experts estimate an 85% failure rate for digital government projects.
> In 2009 alone, government spending in technology worldwide was about 428.38
> billion US dollars, thus failure rates for these kinds of projects are a
> major concern. In this way, understanding reasons for project success or
> failure is an important research and practical problem"
> The papers included here, both separately and collectively, will add to
> our understanding of what goes right and what goes wrong with these often
> complex and costly projects.
> I will be delighted to receive your responses to these papers and, should
> you wish to respond in the form of a paper, I will consider publication in
> an upcoming edition. This is such an important topic it deserves debate.
> I hope you will enjoy reading Information Polity.
> Best wishes,

> Management Special Issue on
> Information Systems to Support Sustainable Consumption
> and Sustainable Supply
>
> ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
>
> Responding to rising concerns about environmental sustainability,
> governments around the world have committed to the promotion of more
> sustainable consumption patterns. Mainstream approaches to promoting
> sustainable consumption often involve government interventions: to correct
> prices, and to provide regulatory frameworks to influence producers to
> become more eco-efficient. Unfortunately, the success of these actions is
> frequently limited by information barriers. Consumers have limited
> information about the social and environmental impacts of products, and
> have long relied instead on price information as well as information
> available on the product package in making their buying decisions. This
> lack of information creates difficulties for consumers when assessing and
> understanding the implications of their choices. Similarly, lack of
> integrated information about environmental impacts in the sustainable
> supply chain could potentially disrupt the entire system. These disruptions
> could, in turn, create higher costs for actors in the supply chain.
>
> Despite the connection between sustainable consumption and sustainable
> supply chain management, current research shows little integration between
> these areas. Recent technological developments have the potential to
> uncover the "black box" of supply chain processes, helping consumers to
> make more sustainable buying choices. These innovations have the capacity
> to streamline the information flow from producer to consumer within supply
> chains. Ontologies, Linked Data, and Semantic Web technologies can handle
> the problems that arise when integrating massive amounts of multi-thematic
> and multi-perspective information from heterogeneous sources to answer
> complex questions that cut through supply chain domain boundaries. The
> innovative use of technologies such as WiFi, Radio Frequency Identification
> (RFID) tags, smartphones, Quick Response (QR) codes, and social media
> enables information tracing as well as opening supply chain information to
> the public, thus reducing the "information asymmetry" that pervades modern
> supply chains. Reducing barriers to information would benefit not only
> consumers but also other actors in the supply chain.
>
> Our special issue focuses on how information technology can be leveraged
> to support transparency of supply chain and consumer trust in order to
> support sustainable consumption. One of the key objectives, besides
> promoting in-depth discussion on the technological, social, economic, and
> political implications of developing sustainable supply chain, is to bridge
> the research gap between sustainable consumption and sustainable supply
> chain literature.
>
> In addition, we seek to expand and incorporate various research approaches
> and methodologies including but not limited to theoretical framing,
> empirical studies utilizing quantitative and qualitative data collection
> and analysis, modeling, and simulation. Further, papers on Semantic web
> approaches that describe the theory and practice of storing, accessing,
> searching, mining, processing, and visualizing big data are invited.
> Multidisciplinary perspectives connecting the study of information
> technology with design science, economics, organizational studies, and
> political science are particularly encouraged.
>
> Topics may include but are not limited to:
>
> . Stakeholders involvement in designing information systems that support
> sustainable supply chain and sustainable consumption . Process modeling of
> sustainable supply chain integration . Semantic technologies to support
> sustainable supply chain integration . Methods and models to deliver
> trusted supply chain information to consumers . Interoperable data
> architectures that support the integration of sustainable consumption and

> Call for paper presentations at the SIG on Philosophy of Information
> Systems Workshop at AMCIS 2013 in Chicago
>
> We are delighted to offer an invitation for submissions to be made for
> presentations on the first evening of the SIG Philosophy of Information
> Systems Workshop that will be held on 15 and 16 August. We invite
> presentations on the topic at this workshop, "Dealing with Complexity".
> ________________________________________
> Workshop theme: Dealing with complexity
>
> A function of the philosophical method of enquiry involves gaining
> comprehension of complex systems. The field of Information Systems has long
> sought to gain understanding (mainly through applied research) by building
> a body of knowledge about complex relationships in social organisms,
> technology, and autopoiesis. This workshop provides a forum for discussion
> of current issues related to the discovery, interpretation, and
> presentation of complexity in the Information Systems context. Of key
> interest to participants will be issues for managing complexity, strategies
> and approaches for designing research programmes, arguments for and against
> modelling and abstractions as representations of reality, and philosophical
> presentations on the topic of complexity versus simplicity and how they may
> be conceived.
>
> The workshop continues the series of increasingly popular events that have
> been run at both the AMCIS and ICIS conferences and will soon be run at
> other IS conferences too. The events are been aimed at promoting
> philosophical discussion of IS topics and issues. A principal aim has been
> to provide a forum for multiple voices to be heard on current subjects.
>
> As with previous and highly successful workshops, this shall take two
> parts in which there will be an opportunity for presentations with
> respondents and open discussion, and a session led by a keynote speaker.
> The SIG AGM shall also be incorporated into the even, at which SIG members
> will have the opportunity to vote on important changes required to be made.
>
> ___________________________________________
> How to submit a presentation:
> Submissions for the workshop are to be emailed direct to the workshop
> convenor at alan.litchfield at aut.ac.nz.
>
> Important dates:
> We would ask that submissions are made by 20 July.
> Acceptance of papers will be notified by 31 July.
