Call for Contributions to:

Responsible Innovations in Game Design, Development and Play

Part of the call for contributions on Responsible Innovations in ICT (The <http://responsible-innovation.org.uk/frriict/call-for-contributions/> FRRIICT project)

Latest submission date: 31 July 2013

Prize of 500 to top 3 entries awarded by the FRRIICT project

Computer and video games are becoming increasingly widespread with a diverse audience in all entertainment, casual and serious domains. The increasing demand for video games across all ages, cultures, genders and uses has had a huge impact on society and the economy. You are invited to submit a proposal on issues, case studies, concepts, solutions and technologies surrounding responsible innovations in video game development to the special call of the <http://responsible-innovation.org.uk/frriict/call-for-contributions/> FRRIICT project on games. There are 3 prizes of 500 each for top 3 submissions and there will be a special session in IGIC 2013 <http://ice-gic.ieee-cesoc.org/> to report on <http://responsible-innovation.org.uk/frriict/call-for-contributions/> FRRIICT submissions in the area of gaming. Prizes will be awarded during the conference and a collective paper from presentations and discussions of the special session including all the attending authors and session chairs will be included in the conference proceedings.

Some areas of particular interest within the theme of video games include, but not limited to:

Education and use of video games

depictions of gender, race, and social behaviour in gaming

storytelling and narrative in video games from an ethical or social perspective, for example, decision-making in morality engines

addiction, bullying, and other social impact of video games

violence and the impact of video games in this and other antisocial behaviour issues

       ethics and propaganda games

serious games and their ethical and social impact

social aspects (teamwork, cooperation, competition, community building, etc.); e.g. building positive environments in video games.

immersive gaming, the future of gaming, and the social and ethical impact of these

The <http://responsible-innovation.org.uk/frriict/call-for-contributions/> FRRIICT project seeks to develop an evidence-based understanding of the social impact of ICT (including video games) and to develop a network of researchers interested in social responsibility and ICT. We have set aside a research budget for the collection of community-based insights into good practice of how to incorporate critical reflection into the planning of ICT research outcomes. This collection of good practice is predicated on the assumption that there is rich experience of these practices within the ICT community that can be shared. This is a bottom-up approach to raising awareness and describing appropriate ways of dealing with the potential social consequences of ICT research outcomes. In addition, the collection of entries will contribute to the development of the community of researchers interested in examining the potential social impacts of ICT research.

One of the key tools that the FRRIICT project is developing is an online resource which will serve as a community-based repository and a means to disseminate good practice and facilitate discussion. Successful submissions to this call for contributions will be hosted there. The 3 top submissions will be rewarded with 500 each.

The special session on Responsible Innovations in Game Design, Development and Play in IGIC 2013 <http://ice-gic.ieee-cesoc.org/> in Vancouver discusses ideas and proposals for developing more responsible and ethical frameworks for game development, design and play and on social impacts of games. This special session reports on submissions to the FRRIICT project on game related issues. Prizes of 500 each for the top 3 submissions to the special call of FRRIICT on games by the project will be awarded during the conference and a collective paper from the results including all the attending authors will be included in the conference proceedings.
