Original Message:
Recently, our department revised whole IS curriculum based on IS 2010 Guideline.
One of the changes is to offer "IT Infrastructure" course.
I am preparing for the new course for this coming fall semester.

Responses:

I share our experience in Mexico:

1. We have taught besides the normal "computer networking" courses,

a course on "Management of an IT Department/Datacenter" for several

   years.

2. With the emergence of IT Service Management initiative, after several

years of negotiations, a small but advanced lab with a DataCenter

   infrastructure was authorized.

3. This LabDataCenter contains advanced TI such as: IBM blade servers,

virtualization of servers, VLANs, SAN (with RAIDs), networking

equipment, firewall, and thin client accesses. I attach a diagram

   as reference.

On it, there are a great number of books on ITSM and IT Networking, but few focused on DataCenters. Anyway, we located the following ones:

1. Jenkins, G. (1997). Information Systems:Policies and Procedures Manual", Prentice-Hall.

2. Jayaswal, K. (2006). Administering Data Centers. Wiley.

3. Poniatowski, M. (2010). Foundation of Green IT. Prentice Hall.

4. Alger, A. (2005). Build the Best Data Center Facility for your Business. Cisco Press.

5. Schiesser, R. (2002). IT Systems Management, Prentice-Hall.

I suggest also to take the ACM e-learning courses of CISCO for networking!

Best succes with this course,

Manuel Mora

I'll recommend my book: Data Communications and Networking by Fitzgerald, Dennis, Durchikova. It covers most of the content area. When we did a survey about how to update it to better fit the new version of the course, there were no suggested inclusions, although we are working on a new version that will be published next summer.

I teach a course in Enterprise architecture and do not use a book. I use a series of articles. If you are interested, I'll send you a list when I return to the US in 2 days.

I used a previous edition of the following book a few years ago in a similar course I taught.....

Burd, Stephen D. Systems Architecture. 6th ed. Boston, MA: Course Technology

You can see a copy of the syllabus I used here (http://www-info.tamu.edu/faculty/jjasperson/CourseSyllabi/MIS3363Syllabus.pdf).
