Call for Papers Pre-ICIS 2013 Academic Workshop and MIS Quarterly Executive, December 2014,
Special Issue on The Business Payoff of Cloud Services

Workshop: Saturday, December 14, 2013, 10:00am - 5:00pm, Milan, Italy
Sponsored by the MIS Quarterly Executive and the Society for Information Management

You are invited to submit an abstract for presentation at the pre-ICIS 2013 SIM Academic Workshop to be held from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, December 14, 2013, in Milan, Italy. This year's workshop will include invited presentations that focus on the theme: The Business Payoff of Cloud Services.

For this pre-ICIS workshop, and for the 2014 MISQE Special Issue, we invite researchers to explore the implications of cloud strategies and practices, with an emphasis on how IT and business leaders can drive business value from the cloud. The intent is to examine the strategic business opportunities and management challenges resulting from the tremendous growth in cloud based services.

We encourage submissions based on in-depth case and/or field studies that analyze key business practices offering insights on what has proven to work. Submissions viewed most favorably will be those based on original in-depth research that provides useful frameworks, proven practices, and rich illustrations of cloud services that yield significant business payoff.  Lessons learned should be generalizable for other executives. Papers could focus on (but are not limited to) the following themes:

-  Innovative business uses of cloud services
-  Cloud enabled new business models
-  Governance practices contributing to delivering value through the cloud
-  Overcoming privacy and security challenges associated cloud services
-  Balancing the use of public versus private clouds
-  Cloud enabled big data and analytics opportunities
-  Cloud?s implications on enterprise architecture and IT infrastructure
-  Cloud?s implications for individual and organizational decision-making
-  Selecting cloud providers and managing the contractual relationship
-  Managing the quality of cloud services, SLAs, and pricing strategies
-  Cloud's ability to exploit the ?Internet of Things?
-  Compatibility, standards and interoperability issues of the Cloud
-  Emerging IT skillsets required for cloud services
-  Managing ?stealth? adoptions by strategic business units
-  Cloud pitfalls?and how to avoid them

Workshop Deadlines:

Sept. 16, 2013: Submit an abstract of no more than 3 single-spaced pages of text and up to 2 figures (figures not counted in 3 page limit)
Oct. 7, 2013: Notification of workshop acceptance with preliminary editorial feedback

Please note that research must be original. Articles published in or under consideration for other journals or as book chapters cannot be considered for the workshop. Papers previously presented at conferences must be revised in order to receive consideration.

Please send a cover letter with your abstract submission that includes:
1. All authors names and contact information.
2. A statement that this research has not been published by, nor is under review at, a journal or as a book or book chapter.
2. If the research has been presented at a conference or published in conference proceedings, please indicate which conference(s).
4. Designation that necessary legal permission for publication has been, or can be, obtained from any identified organizations.


Special Issue of MIS Quarterly Executive - December 2014

We are pleased to announce that the December 2014 issue of MISQ Executive (MISQE) will be a special issue dedicated to academic research on the theme of this workshop. Authors do not have to submit to or attend the pre-ICIS workshop to submit to the Special Issue. Papers will be submitted to a regular MISQE review process under the guidance of the special issue editors.

Submissions to MISQE should be written for an IT executive readership and should describe practice-oriented research findings and guidelines. All authors are encouraged to look at prior published MISQE research articles for presentation models. All prior articles can be downloaded free by AIS and SIM members at: www.misqe.org. AIS members can also access MISQE articles via the AIS eLibrary.

Important Dates:

Special Issue full paper submission deadline: March 17, 2014
First editorial review sent to authors: May 2, 2014
Paper resubmission based on editor feedback deadline: July 1, 2014
Second editorial review, decision and suggestions to authors: August 1, 2014
Final submission of accepted papers deadline: October 3, 2014
MISQE publication: December 2014

Note: Authors of accepted SIM Academic Workshop abstracts are invited to submit a full paper by January 1, 2014, to receive preliminary editorial feedback for developing their ideas prior to the special issue full paper deadline, which is open to all researchers.
