Doctoral Student position in Information Systems, for a period of four years

Department of Information Processing Science and the INTERACT/EveLINE research group (http://www.oulu.fi/tol/node/20094, http://www.oulu.fi/eveline/) at the University of Oulu, Finland, has an opening for one (1) doctoral student position in Information Systems.

The INTERACT/EveLINE research group focuses on research themes of participation, inclusion, empowerment and agency in the context of information and communication technology (ICT). The group undertakes research related to understanding and supporting participatory design, user-centered design, user innovation and human interaction with ICT in divergent everyday life contexts. Recently, a particular focus has been on understanding and strengthening children’s and young people’s participation and agency in issues concerning their life. Another research stream has concentrated on understanding and supporting more open and democratic development approaches, open source software development as special focus of study. Generally, the research group acknowledges that ICT has become intertwined and embedded in almost all parts of our everyday life, including leisure and civic activity, thereby establishing new forms of participation and design. Hence, “users” cannot be considered as passive consumers anymore, but at least as content producers if not even as (co-)designers and innovators. This calls for reconsidering the traditional understandings of the roles of users and designers as well as for different development approaches that place emphasis on people’s empowerment and inclusion in designing, shaping, innovating and co-creating ICT in their everyday life. The INTERACT/EveLINE research group has strong background in multidisciplinary research, combining perspectives from both humanistic and ICT oriented disciplines. The group relies on qualitative and participatory research approaches.

The research performed by the doctoral student should fit or complement the above mentioned research themes.
