Tenure-Track Assistant / Associate Professor Position in Social Media / Social Computing
Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media
Michigan State University

The Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media (TISM) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of social media and/or social computing. We seek a scholar whose cutting-edge research centers on innovative social media and/or social computing practices, applications, and/or effects. Interest in mobile applications of social media, ubiquitous computing, big data, health IT, predictive analytics, collective intelligence, and/or computational social science is particularly desirable. Programming skills and proficiency in network analysis are a plus. Teaching duties will include graduate and undergraduate courses in information and communication technologies (ICTs) and social media and/or social computing. The ability to teach courses in research methods, social computing, social networks, ICTs, human-computer interaction (HCI), and relevant programming languages is also desired.

Assistant Professor candidates should be able to demonstrate their potential to obtain external funding to support their scholarship and to publish peer-reviewed works in respected research outlets. Associate Professor candidates should have a track record of successful grant seeking and a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Candidates will be excellent teachers and, for mid-career applicants, mentors to graduate students and junior faculty. We encourage individuals from a diverse range of disciplinary and methodological traditions to apply. A PhD in a relevant discipline, such as Informatics, Computer Science, Communication, Business, Psychology, Economics, Sociology or other areas in the social or technical sciences, should be completed prior to the start of the appointment, expected to be August 16, 2014.

The TISM department is a member of the iSchools consortium, and home to a dynamic, interdisciplinary faculty internationally renowned for their cutting-edge research on the uses and implications of ICTs. Most recently, the doctoral program in Media and Information Studies, offered jointly by TISM along with the School of Journalism and the Departments of Advertising + Public Relations, was ranked #3 among Media Ph.D. programs in the U.S. by the National Research Council. Our curricula address both the theoretical and practical aspects of media use and production, and our alumni have achieved positions of prominence in academia, industry, and government. Projects involving cross-disciplinary teams are actively pursued and encouraged. Current research foci of the department include social media, human computer interaction, sociotechnical systems, digital games and meaningful play, ICT for development (ICT4D), health and technology, commerce, and communication economics and policy. Our faculty also engage in creative scholarship, design traditional and interactive media experiences, and develop sociotechnical systems.
