SPECIAL ISSUE ON Emotions and People-Oriented Programming

INTRODUCTION:
Traditional approaches to software engineering focus on the functional and non-functional requirements of systems, while not considering how users feel about their use of the system. While recent work has focused on the larger socio-technical influences of systems, including user goals, the emotional desires of users has not been considered sufficiently. This can lead to the development of a product that despite being technically correct is, nevertheless, rejected by its intended users because important requirements were not discovered and incorporated. For example, an emergency contact telephone to be used in case of accident should be aware that the person calling is often in distress due to the shock of the experience. The system should be designed as simply as possible and not to prompt the user with a complex series of questions to automatically decide the most appropriate human operator or course of action. Analysing the emotional desires surrounding the sought system and the involved participants can result in uncovering important requirements that were not obvious to either clients or developers. Using these emotionally-directed requirements during the design of the system can result in important features that directly address users' personal needs.




OBJECTIVE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE:
While the consideration of emotions in design, including digital media design, is not new, incorporating this into the greater software development lifecycle and programming environments has not been investigated. We are interested how to model emotional desires of users, and how to subsequently design, implement, evaluate, and improve such emotional desires into systems. Could traditional software development activities such as requirements engineering or systems architecture benefit from the inclusion of emotions as part of the process? Is the consideration of emotions more relevant for some areas, such as human-computer interaction or digital media design, than for others?




RECOMMENDED TOPICS:
Topics to be discussed in this special issue include (but are not limited to) the following:

  *   Requirements engineering for emotions
  *   Software design and programming of emotionally-oriented systems
  *   Appropriation and deployment of emotionally-oriented systems
  *   Maintenance for emotionally-oriented systems
  *   Software processes and practice for emotionally-oriented systems
  *   Evaluation of emotionally-directed requirements
  *   Emotions in human-computer interaction
  *   Emotions in digital media design
  *   Affective computing approaches to software development
  *   Case studies relating information systems and emotions



SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit papers for this special theme issue on Emotions and People-Oriented Programming on or before 31 January 2014. All submissions must be original and may not be under review by another publication.
