EMMSAD'2014 - First Call for Papers

Nineteenth International Conference on Exploring Modeling Methods in Systems Analysis and Design

http://www.emmsad.org

Thessaloniki, Greece 16-17 June, 2014 (held in conjunction with CAiSE'2014)
Submissions due: abstracts February 20. 2014 ; full papers February 26, 2014

The field of information systems analysis and design includes numerous modeling methods and notations (e.g. ER, ORM, UML, ArchiMate, EPC, BPMN,...) that are typically evolving. Even with some attempts to standardize (e.g. UML for object-oriented software design), new modeling methods are constantly being introduced, many of which differ only marginally from previous approaches. These ongoing changes significantly impact the way information systems, enterprises, and business processes are being analyzed and designed in practice.

The EMMSAD conference focuses on exploring, evaluating, and enhancing modeling methods and methodologies for the analysis and design of information systems, enterprises, and business processes. Though the need for such studies is well recognized, there is a paucity of such research in the literature. The objective of the EMMSAD conference series is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners interested in modeling methods for systems analysis and design to meet, and exchange research ideas and results. It also provides the participants an opportunity to present their research papers and experience reports, and to take part in open discussions. EMMSAD'2014 is the nineteenth in a very successful series of EMMSAD events, previously held in Heraklion, Barcelona, Pisa, Heidelberg, Stockholm, Interlaken, Toronto, Velden, Riga, Porto, Luxembourg, Trondheim, Montpellier, Amsterdam, Hammamet, London, Gdansk, and Valencia

No other event provides the following mix of benefits for those doing research on modeling techniques:

* The ability to look on similarities and differences between different modeling approaches. Most other events of this kind look only on a specific technique or type of modelling, which even if they are more focused, might make it more difficult to spot the general mechanisms at play in modelling
* 3-4 comprehensive reviews on each paper
* A mixed audience of senior and junior people
* The opportunity of both thorough presentation of the research and long discussion time, which combined with the previous points are specifically beneficial for PhD-students, but which also for senior people can be very inspiring to get ideas for new research

Special Theme for EMMSAD 2014: Quality of models and modeling languages

Whereas modeling techniques traditionally have been used to create intermediate artifacts in systems analysis and design, modern modeling methodologies take a more active approach. For instance in Business Process Management (BPM), Model-driven Software Engineering, Domain specific modeling (DSM), Enterprise Architecture (EA) , Enterprise modeling (EM), Interactive Models and Active Knowledge Modelling , the models are used directly as part of the information system of the organization. At the same time, similar modeling techniques are also used for sense-making and communication, model simulation, quality assurance, and requirements specification in connection to more traditional forms of information systems and enterprise development. Since modeling techniques are used in such a large variety of tasks with different goals, it is hard to assess whether a model is sufficiently good to achieve the goals. To provide guidance in this process, knowledge for understanding quality of models and modeling languages is needed.

Topics of Interest:

In addition to the main theme, we solicit papers on topics included (but are not limited to) theoretical and/or empirical or case-based exploration of modeling methods and methodologies in a systems analysis and design context. The topics of interest include general modeling issues such as:

*             Modeling languages and meta-modeling
*             The process of modeling
*             Experiences in modeling
* Teaching modeling, analysis and design
*             Theoretical/philosophical foundations of modeling

Submission guidelines:

EMMSAD 2014 accepts two types of submissions-Completed Research and Research-In-Progress. Completed research papers should include analysis of data and discussion on research findings. Research-in-progress papers report on research that is well under way with preliminary results available at the time of the conference. Please use the following format for your submissions:

* For all submissions, the paper should not exceed 15 pages (including references and appendices). The paper may refer to a theoretical analysis of a scientific challenge, as well as the presentation of a solution to an identified scientific challenge.
* We practice double-blind review, thus make sure there is no information in the paper that identifies you as the author
* Use 10 point font for the bulk of the body text.

Only electronic submissions in Adobe PDF format are accepted. Submit both the recommended abstract and the full paper using the conference management system available at https://www.easychair.org/account/signin.cgi?conf=emmsad14

Since 2009, the EMMSAD proceedings have been published in Springer's LNBIP series. Accepted full papers will be published in the workshop proceedings and should use the Springer LNBIP style, see http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html. Top papers in the completed research category will be considered (after necessary extension and enhancement) for journal publications in the Journal of Database Management http://www.igi-global.com/journal/journal-database-management-jdm/1072
