Introduction

MOOCs (Massive online open course) are relatively recent (about 5 years).
In these last 5 years millions of people are following massive open online
courses, whether with the purpose to obtain a diploma or just to learn new
things or have new experiences. Besides that, the number of higher education
institutions offering this kind of courses, in different formats, is also
increasing.

Due to the fact that this is new and involving more and more people and
institutions, it is attracting media attention. It is also possible to
witness a significant interest from higher education institutions (no matter
its size or type or country of origin) as well as startups.

The offer of such a solution always involves technology - from the side of
the offer as well as from the side of the applicant (target).

The reasons subjacent to the enrolment in such a course can be related with
the International reputation of higher education institution but also to
other reasons such as the interest of the topic, the syllabus, the tutors,
the duration of the course, as well as the quality (perceived) of the
course. Finally, some of these courses are offered for free, meaning that
there is a business approach behind it that makes this offer possible.

Due to all these factors it is time to reflect on what is happening, what
are the business models? How does the student learn? What are the good
practices about it, just to mention a few.

The objective of this book is to provide a space for a discussion regarding

MOOC for a higher education institution. To sum up, the objective of the
book is create an opportunity for discussion and sharing of pedagogical and
technical strategies to the sharing of MOOC best practices as well as the

and implementing those solutions..
