‘Speed meeting’ with Barney Glaser: Is there a future for Grounded Theory (GT) in Management Science?

Keynote Speakers: Pr. Barney Glaser, Pr. Judith Holton

Grounded Theory Workshop organized by the MPW (Managing in a Pluricultural World) Neoma research group.

Location : Neoma Paris Executive Campus

 9 Rue d'Athènes, 75009 Paris. France.

April, 16th 2014 (9.30 a.m.-12.30 p.m.; 2p.m.-5p.m.)

This research event is opened to grounded theorist scholars from all areas of management science and from different countries. The term ‘management’ is used in a broad meaning and includes scholars studying the management of any organization, such as healthcare organizations, start-ups or administrations.

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together researchers from several disciplines and allow them to share their research and questions under the benevolent and encouraging eye of GT originator, Barney Glaser. We wish to promote full understanding of what GT can truly bring to management and organization studies.

During the morning (9.30 a.m. till 12.30 p.m.) on the 16th of April, a panel of five experienced grounded theorists will present and discuss some non-consensual issues about GT, which will then be opened to the audience’s comments and, of course, Barney Glaser’s. The issues that will be debated are as follows:

1) Are Glaserian and Straussian GT reconcilable? This question will be introduced to the audience by Judith Holton and Isabelle Walsh.

2) Are software useful, time-wasting or dangerous when you do GT? This question will be introduced to the audience by Sébastien Point and Gaetan Mourmant.

3) Can you mix qualitative and quantitative data, methods and techniques when doing GT? This question will be introduced to the audience by Isabelle Walsh and Gaetan Mourmant.

4) What is the added value of GT to research and practice? This question will be introduced to the audience by Valery Michaud.

During the afternoon (2 p.m. till 5 p.m.) on the 16th of April, five unpublished grounded theories selected by Barney Glaser and Judith Holton as promising will be presented by their authors and discussed with the audience.

Panelists:

- Barney G. Glaser, PhD, Hon PhD. The Grounded Theory Institute, Mill Valley, CA USA.

Barney Glaser, the originator of GT, received his PhD from Columbia University where he studied under Lazarsfeld, Zetterberg and Merton and began, using quantitative data, to develop the methodological ideas at the heart of GT. He went on to join Anselm Strauss at the University of California San Francisco in doing a study of dying in hospitals and in teaching PhD students methods and analysis.  This study, Awareness of Dying, provided Glaser with the opportunity to refine and extend his methodological ideas to qualitative data and would lead to the publication, co-authored with Strauss, of The Discovery of Grounded Theory (1967). Glaser has continued his writing and has now published over fifteen books and readers as well as numerous papers. He continues to offer seminars with PhD students through The Grounded Theory Institute. In 1998 he received an honorary doctorate from Stockholm University, Sweden. bglaser at speakeasy.net

-Judith A. Holton, PhD. Associate Professor of Management, Commerce Department. Ron Joyce Centre for Business Studies. Mount Allison University. Sackville, CANADA.

Judith is a Fellow of the Grounded Theory Institute and former Editor of The Grounded Theory Review, a research journal dedicated to GT research. She is author of several publications regarding classic GT and a frequent collaborator and co-author with the methodology’s originator, Dr. Barney Glaser. jholton at mta.ca

Gaëtan has published over 20 papers in peer-reviewed conferences, books and journals, in particular the Grounded Theory Review. In 2012, he won the Magid Igbaria Outstanding Conference Paper of the Year Award along with Katerina Voutsina. This paper used the Classic Grounded Theory methodology and was presented at the ACM SIGMIS Computers and People Research conference. In 2013, he taught three interactive research seminars on how to do a research using Classic Grounded Theory methodology. Those seminars were held at the Business Science Institute (an eDBA program), at Rouen Business School, as well as the Nyenrode Business Universiteit. gmourmant at gmail.com

-Sébastien Point, PhD. Professor of Management. EM Strasbourg Business School, Université de Strasbourg (France).

Sébastien has a strong interest in developing grounded theories techniques for CAQDAS Software such as Atlas/ti, Nvivo and QDA Miner. Over the last fifteen years and through his various publications, he has been investigating coding strategies that fit the use of these software. s.point at free.fr
