Assistant Professor of Business Analytics


Job description

The assistant professor will initiate, supervise, and perform
high-quality research supporting business analytics; teach courses in
Bachelor and Master Programmes of the Erasmus School of Economics (ESE);
initiate and contribute to externally funded research projects of the
group; assist in the supervision of Ph.D. students and contribute to the
management of the department. The candidate will be embedded in a group
of enthusiastic scientists at the Econometric Institute of the ESE.

Position profile: Business Analytics

The assistant professor of Business Analytics specialises in
computerized systems and computational models for business decisions
with the help of techniques from computational intelligence, text
mining, Semantic Web, Big Data, simulation, and agents. Such techniques
are studied both from a theoretical perspective as well as from an
applied perspective as far as they contribute to improved decision
making within the context of business analytics. Close cooperation is
expected with other researchers in the Econometric Institute and the ESE.

Together with the colleagues of the Econometric Institute, the candidate
will contribute to the Bachelor and Master programmes in Econometrics
and Management Science, as well as to the Logistics and Information
Systems programme of ERIM. The main characteristic of these programmes
is the interaction between theory and practice. This is guaranteed by
the fact that the staff members of the Econometric Institute are active
researchers and that the institute maintains close contacts with many
companies and other organizations.

Job qualifications

The candidate is expected to have the following qualifications:
* A Ph.D. degree in a relevant field such as computer science,
computational intelligence, information systems or a related
quantitative field;
* High quality publications in international journals and conference
proceedings;
* Excellent communication, organization and management skills;
* Strong cooperation skills and ability to work in a team;
* Experience in teaching academic courses (especially programming
courses on Excel, Access, Matlab, and Java);
* Fluent (written and spoken) Dutch and English.

Conditions of employment

The initial contract will be running for a period of two years. The
salary for a full-time Assistant Professor is based on scale 11 and 12
(max. € 5,070 gross per month) excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3%
end of year. The conditions of employment are in accordance with the
Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU), with a 38
hours working week and an extensive package of fringe benefits. The ESE
offers many opportunities to maintain professional skills and knowledge.
The fringe benefits include an employment conditions selection model and
participation in a salary savings scheme or a life-course savings
scheme. On site, a child day-care is available as well as sports facilities.

Organization

The Erasmus School of Economics (ESE) of the Erasmus University
Rotterdam has a long tradition of scientific and applied research, and
is a leading academic institution, hosting some of the world’s foremost
economists in all major areas of economics and business economics. The
School has approximately 4500 students and over 300 employees. In order
to be able to deliver top quality, a team of professional and motivated
staff is essential. The Econometric Institute provides students with
high quality educational programme in Econometrics & Management Science.
It enables the faculty to do fundamental and applied research in
econometrics, management science, and related fields.

The Computer Science Group within the Econometric Institute focuses on
the interplay between computer science and economics. On one hand,
members of the group study economic phenomena by using computational
techniques originating from computer science. On the other hand, the
transformation of business processes through ICT is investigated. The
research of the group takes place within the context of Intelligent
Systems for Decision Support. The research activities are combined in
the Erasmus Centre of Business Intelligence. Members of the group are
involved in teaching in the programme as mentioned above.
