*Want to start a science based business?* In this course we take 12 days to
create a business plan and a software prototype based on a scientific
theory, patent, concept, paper, or idea. On the last day your
implementation and business plan are evaluated by a board of investors in a
Dragon's Den style session. The course is adorned with lectures from
experienced science based entrepreneurs, academic experts on valorization,
innovation, and science based entrepreneurship.

The course follows the Netherware <http://www.netherware.nl/> incubator
program.

*Topics handled are*:
- Requirements management: prioritization for releases, tracing en
tracking, scope management
- Architecture and design: variability, product architectures,
internationalization, platforms, localization and customization
- Development methods: prototyping, realization and maintenance, testing,
configuration management, delivery; development teams
- Knowledge management: web-based knowledge infrastructures,
- Protection of intellectual property: NDA, Software Patents
- Organization of a product software company: business functions,
financing, venture capital, partnering, business plan, product/service
trade-off, diversification

The summer school is a hybrid form that combines lectures with development
of an innovative product and writing of a business plan. We will also do
several company visits.

Examples of product ideas are genomics data processing products,
visualization engines for complex data sets, autism assistance apps, mobile
apps for advanced data collection, apps for wearable devices, etc.

Please note that a motivating idea is required to enter the course. You
must supply the lecturers with your idea before joining the course in your
motivation letter. If you are joining the course with a peer, ideas can be
shared.

TARGET GROUP
Students from the sciences who are creative. Typically: Students from
mathematics, computer science, chemistry, physics, bio-medical,
life-sciences, and business and ICT.

COURSE AIM
At the end of the course you will:
- know what developing a software product entails
- be able to work with the scientific theories of product software
- be able to start an own science based software enterprise

If your idea and execution are good enough, seed investments are available
from several sources, such as private investors and seed funds.

STUDY LOAD
A day is filled from 9 to 5. We start in the morning with a class, have a
working session from 11-16 and an interactive session from 16-17 daily.
Please be prepared to work extra hours as this course concerns the success
of your own business!
