[AISWorld] Invitation and CFP to SIGPhilosophy Workshop at AMCIS 2014

The SIG Philosophy of Information Systems takes great pleasure in inviting you to participate in our AMCIS workshop at Savannah, this year titled:

"Social networks: philosophical and psychological viewpoints"

The SIG on Philosophy in Information Systems workshop at AMCIS 2014 in Savannah continues the series of increasingly popular events that have been run at AIS conferences. The events are aimed at promoting philosophical discussion of IS topics and issues important to researchers. A principal aim has been to provide a forum for multiple voices to be heard on current subjects.

This year the workshop considers that in the hyper-connected world of the 21st century, human relationships are recontextualized through new media communication, such as through mobile smart devices. The SIG on Philosophy in Information Systems will host an exploration into various philosophical viewpoints to gain perspectives of issues raised by new communication media. These issues may include: ubiquity, embodiment, entanglement, the divided self,  the being for others, the being in the world, worldliness, otherness, addiction, the ego, schizophrenia, the social media revolution, the rise of the prosumer, ethical issues and dilemmas, social dynamics of society, participation and democracy, privacy and security, the citizen reporter, access to information and the quest for authenticity. As a subtext to this topic is the concept, "Getting serious with qualitative research: 43 approaches and counting" (Tesch, 1990). It seems apparent that the collection and analysis of social data provides traps for the unwary and it appears too that the plethora of qualitative processes is overwhelming for many. Therefore we also invite specialists in qualitative methods to also submit papers, perhaps illustrated with cases, of their studies.

As with previous and highly successful workshops, this shall take two parts in which there will be an opportunity for presentations with respondents and open discussion, and a session led by a keynote speaker. The SIG AGM shall also be incorporated into the event.

How to submit a presentation:
Submissions for the workshop are to be made to the convener who will handle your submission in confidence: alan.litchfield at aut.ac.nz

Submissions should be in Word doc format and preferrably using the AMCIS template for consistency.

Important dates:
We would ask that submissions are made by 27 July.
Acceptance of papers will be notified by 31 July.
Conference presentations will be made on 7 August
