Director of Doctoral Programs
Bentley University

Bentley University is seeking applications for a senior academic to serve as Director of Doctoral Programs to begin in July 2015. The ideal candidate will have a strong research record, on the level of facultycurrently holding named professorships at Bentley, and an interest in developing the next generation of business academics. The Director will provide strategic leadership for our two programs (in Accountancy and Business), create and execute strategies for increased program recognition and student recruitment, and engage outside stakeholders while maintaining a significant presence with the programs’ faculty and students. The Director of Doctoral Programs will also be tasked with managing the admissions process for the programs, as well as with program budgeting, assessment, and reporting. It is expected that the Director will teach in the programs and be involved with advising doctoral students. The Director will work closely with an assistant, who will support many of the administrative details of the program.  The Director will be hired at the rank of Full Professor. Salary, benefits, teaching load, and other aspects of the package are competitive and will be based on the experience and qualifications of the candidate.

Launched in 2006, doctoral programs at Bentley build on a broader base of knowledge than typically pursued in most programs. Required courses reflect the overarching themes of business, technology andsociety. Umbrella courses focus on qualitative and quantitative research methods; the philosophy of the social sciences, which explores how knowledge is constructed and applied to society; and a signature seminar in ethics and corporate social responsibility. Bentley’s doctoral programs are interdisciplinary in nature. Students pursue PhDs in either Accountancy or Business.  The Accountancy program seeks students interested in topics including audit quality; management control; investor decision-making; accounting information systems; IT controls; and corporate governance. Students in the Business program focus their programsaround topics such as business analytics; corporate governance & ethics; information systems; management; marketing; women in business; or science & industry. Most doctoral applicants will have completed a Master’s degree in an appropriate field, but practice experience or equivalent education may be substituted in some exceptional cases. Admission to the program takes placeevery other year with cohorts of approximately 13 students across both programs. At any given time, total program enrollment is limited to 30-35 students to ensure that standards are maintained.

Graduates from our programs have been placed insuch leading institutions as Brown University; Copenhagen Business School; Florida International University; Penn State University; Villanova University, and West Virginia University.

Qualifications: We seek candidates with a doctoral degree in an appropriate academic discipline, an outstanding record of scholarship, an ongoing and high quality research program, and an international reputation. The successful candidate will likely be housed in one of our business departments that actively support doctoralstudents (e.g., Accountancy; Computer Information Systems; Management; Marketing; Information & Process Management), although candidates from Economics and Finance will be considered.  Particular consideration will be given to scholars whose research has potential synergies with current Bentley University faculty and doctoral students. Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in teaching, preferably in areas of interest for Bentley’s PhD programs. A qualified candidate should also have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, an ability to thrive in a cross-cultural environment, and be able to interact effectively with educators, business professionals, administrators, and students. Position expectations include: contributing to Bentley's research environment by publishing in top quality journals and by taking a leadership role in mentoring junior faculty and doctoral students, service on doctoraldissertation committees, and service to academia through other roles such as leadership of academic organizations, chairing major conference organizing committees, and editorship of high quality journals.
