APPOINTMENT PLAN FOR A PROFESSOR IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION WITH SPECIALIZATION IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS

 

Åbo Akademi University is an internationally acclaimed research university with a wide-ranging educational responsibility for the Swedish language in Finland. With its strong Nordic ties Åbo Akademi University has an acclaimed and recognized position within research and education both nationally and internationally.

The Faculty of Social Sciences and Economics, which starts its work on January 1, 2015 offers academic programs in economics (including business administration), social sciences and law. The Faculty has three master’s degree programs and three independent research institutes. Information systems is one of the four business administration subjects within the Faculty and is also responsible for the Master’s Degree Program in Digital and Mobile Business which is taught in English. The Institute for Advanced Management Systems Research (IAMSR) carries out research programs in Information Systems. In addition to the professor in business administration with specialization in Information Systems there are two professors, two university lecturers, one post doc researcher and one university teacher as well as researchers within the various research projects at IAMSR.

1. EMPLOYMENT

According to the Universities Act (558/2009), a professor shall carry out and supervise scientific or artistic work, give education based on it and follow developments in science or art and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in his/her field.

Teachers and researchers have a total working time of 1,600 hours per year. The general collective agreement for universities and annual, individual work plans regulate and specify the working hours and tasks of the professors.

Åbo Akademi University applies individual salaries in accordance with the national salary system for universities in Finland. For professors the demand level of the salary is set at levels 8-11. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance is added to the salary.

A committee has been appointed to support the Head of Department and the decision makers within the university in the selection process and will participate in all steps of the recruiting process.

2. FIELD OF ACTIVITIES

The research and teaching area for the professorship is business administration with specialization in Information Systems. The duties of the professor include research and teaching within business administration and information and communication technology with a focus on the digital economy. Presently this means developing and implementing theory frameworks for analytics methods for companies and organizations.

The duties include being in charge of the subject and its examination as well as curriculum development in Information Systems. Duties will also include work with the Master’s Degree Program in Digital and Mobile Business, which is taught in English. There is close cooperation with the University of Turku in the Turku Information Systems Research Alliance (TISRA) that aims at developing joint research programs. There is also research cooperation with several European and Chinese universities.

The appointee is expected to show good cooperation skills with the industry, business and public organizations, and to develop and manage externally financed research projects.

3. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR A POSITION AS PROFESSOR

An appointee to the professorship shall demonstrate top level scholarly qualifications within business administration with specialization in Information Systems as well as pedagogical competencies including good teaching skills. Furthermore, the appointee shall demonstrate experience in obtaining external financing for and managing research projects, experience from international cooperation and management skills. Practical experience from industrial, business and public organizations is considered to be a merit. The duties include financial responsibility for the research and teaching programs and personnel management.

In the evaluation of the scientific competence journal articles of high scientific quality, book chapters and books, research programs the applicant has carried out, experience of managing research projects as well as experience of international research projects or international expert tasks are taken into account.

In the evaluation of the teaching skills pedagogical education, experience of supervision of doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s theses, acquired practical teaching experience, production of teaching material, and other teaching merits are taken into account in accordance with Rector’s decision on pedagogical skills (20.6.2012).

Language skills

The administrative language of Åbo Akademi University is Swedish. A requirement for a teaching post at Åbo Akademi University is full proficiency in the Swedish language and an ability to understand the Finnish language. To be considered for a teaching appointment it is possible for an appointee to document the required language skills after the set application deadline has passed, if this will not delay the recruitment process. Language requirements at Åbo Akademi University are defined in 78 § of the Universities Act (558/2009) and in the Åbo Akademi University internal language instructions (accepted by the University Board on February 25, 2010).

Requirements for native Finnish citizens

For teaching and research positions at Åbo Akademi University the appointee is required to demonstrate full mastering (excellent knowledge) of Swedish and sufficient knowledge of Finnish. Full mastering (excellent knowledge) of Swedish is proved if

1. The appointee has received his/her school education in Swedish and has passed a written exam as part of a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree

2. The appointee has passed the Åbo Akademi University test in Swedish

3. The appointee has passed the national language test in Swedish with the mark excellent oral and written knowledge of Swedish, in accordance with the regulations for assessment of the required knowledge of Finnish and Swedish within the public administration, as defined by the law (481/2003).

If the appointee has passed a national Swedish language test at level 6, the language skills must be proven in an additional language test in Swedish arranged by the Language Board of Åbo Akademi University.

Requirements for foreigners and Finnish citizens who are non-native Finnish citizens

Åbo Akademi University decides on the requirements for language proficiency in Swedish and Finnish of foreigners and Finnish citizens who are non-native Finnish citizens. A foreigner or a non-native Finnish citizen should prove sufficient knowledge of Swedish to be able to successfully carry out the duties of the position. The Faculty, in cooperation with the Language Board of Åbo Akademi University, will decide for each appointee, whether he/she has sufficient language skills for the position.

The Faculty Board can decide separately that knowledge of Finnish is not necessary for successfully carrying out the duties of the position.

Knowledge of Swedish is not a requirement for the appointment but the appointee should be ready, within a couple of years, to carry out teaching and administrative duties in Swedish.

4. APPLICATION

For the professorship a written application is needed. Instructions for writing the application can be found on the university website: http://www.abo.fi/personal/en/universitetsportfolj.

To the application should be added

1. A short written summary of merits and activities that is important for successfully handling the tasks of the professorship; these include work at universities and research institutes, work in doctoral programs, management of graduate schools and supervision of doctoral students, positions of expertise and trust, records of teaching and supervision of theses and a short outline of planned research and teaching and the future development of Information Systems. This summary should be provided in English by the applicant.

2. A list of publications and other possible research work that the applicant wants to present in support of his/her application for the professorship. The number of publications to be evaluated is limited to the 10 most important publications the applicant wants to submit and these should be indicated in the list of publications. The publications should be sent in 4 copies as attachments to the application. Three copies are reserved for the external expert evaluators and one copy will be held by the university in support of the final decision making.

The application should be addressed to the Rector of Åbo Akademi University. More detailed information about the deadline for the application and the address to which it should be sent will be advertised.

5. ADDRESS OF THE APPLICANT

In order for an applicant to be able to receive information and messages connected to the recruitment during the process, the applicant must inform Åbo Akademi University of how he/she can be reached with written information.

6. CHOICE OF EXPERT EVALUATORS AND THEIR TASKS

The Faculty Board will select three expert evaluators to give a written assessment about the applicants and their qualifications and merits for the professorship. In the choice of experts the different schools within the subject field should be taken into account in order to enable an objective and systematic evaluation of the applicants. Before the expert evaluators are appointed, the applicants will be given an opportunity to comment on any legal challenges with regard to the expert evaluator’s eligibility. Any comments should be made within 30 days from the date when information about the expert evaluators has been mailed; the possibility of legal restrictions on eligibility is stated in law (434/2003) in 27-29 §.

The expert evaluators will submit separate written statements. The statement should be submitted within three months after the expert evaluators have been appointed, unless special circumstances justify that the statement is delayed. The expert evaluators should not participate in the further handling of the recruitment process after they have submitted their statements.

The expert evaluators have as their task to carry out written evaluations of the applicants. The evaluation should be systematic and motivated for the applicants they find to be most qualified for the professorship; these applicants should be ranked.

If the number of applicants is no more than three, the evaluation should be motivated for all applicants. If the number of applicants is more than three, the evaluation should be motivated for at least three applicants. An evaluation with motivations should be given only for applicants who the evaluator finds to be qualified for the professorship.

7. PROOF OF TEACHING SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

After the expert evaluation has been carried out, the Faculty Board may offer the applicants a possibility to give proof of their teaching skills and experience. The requirement on a professor is that he/she should show good teaching skills. The applicants will be given more information about the opportunity to prove their teaching skills during the appointment process.

8. APPOINTMENT PROCESS

After the statements from the expert evaluators have been received, the committee will decide which candidates will be invited for an interview and a test on their teaching skills.

Based on the statement by the committee the Faculty Board will evaluate and decide upon the qualifications of the applicants, select the candidate who is best qualified and make a proposal to the Rector that the candidate is appointed to the professorship. If none of the candidates is found to be qualified, the Faculty Board may propose to the Rector that the process is discontinued.

A decision regarding qualifications for the professorship and a proposal for appointment can also be made even if not all of the expert evaluators have submitted their statement, if

o The deadline for submitting the statements has passed

o Statements have been received from at least two expert evaluators

o It is found that the remaining statement can be omitted without compromising an objective evaluation of the applicants
