Special Issue of Information & Management
Theme: Information Technology and Innovation: Drivers, Challenges and
Impacts
Guest Editor: Indranil Bose, Indian Institute of Management Calcutta

Innovation is widely accepted as “an iterative process initiated by the
perception of a new market and/or new service opportunity for a technology
based invention which leads to development, production and marketing tasks
striving for commercial success of the invention” (OECD, 1991). Eurostat
2012 data on firm expenditures on innovation show that Gross Domestic
Expenditure on R&D (GERD) was more than 245,673 million Euros in 2010
(Eurostat, 2012). Numerous studies across the globe highlight how firms
invest in R&D to spur innovation. This shows the importance that firms
place on innovation. Practice of innovation in global firms may assume
different forms and types. Some prominent categories include product
innovation, process innovation, organizational innovation, reverse
innovation, radical innovation, incremental innovation, among others. Some
of these innovation efforts are also classified as disruptive innovation or
frugal innovation based on the type of innovation that the firm indulges
in.

Numerous academic studies over the past half century have established the
importance of innovation for a firm. However, lesser focus has been put on
uncovering the relationship between various innovation related activities
and their drivers as well as impact of innovation on the overall
performance of firms (Van Leeuwen, 2002; Sood & Tellis, 2009; Camison &
Villar-Lopez, 2014). Gurbaxani et al. (1994) highlighted various
institutional factors that have a statistically significant impact on IT
innovation. The importance of innovation is well established but what
activities are best for firms and which innovation drivers will have higher
impact under different innovation scenarios is not well studied.
Advancement of knowledge in this field will enable decision makers to be
better prepared about factors to consider and challenges to anticipate
while leading firms on innovation highways (Tang et al., 2013). An
interesting question in this direction is what factors ensure success and
deep impact in innovation endeavors (Ayuso et al., 2011).

This special issue will focus on advancing research on innovation drivers,
challenges to innovation processes in a globalized economy, and impacts of
innovation by publishing rigorous research intending to provide insights
about the multiple facets of technological innovation in firms. The focus
of the articles should be on drivers, impacts and challenges related to IT
enabled technological innovation or innovations in technology centric
firms.

Generating insights into the field of IT innovation may require
inter-disciplinary research involving various research traditions. This
special issue will encourage both qualitative and quantitative analysis
aimed to provide insights into innovation. Innovation related research from
different academic disciplines like information systems, operations
management, organizational science, strategic management, behavioral and
cognitive sciences and other related areas are welcome for this issue. This
special issue will seek original manuscripts that are previously
unpublished and that present a novel approach in enhancing the
understanding related to the different facets of IT based innovation for
the academic as well as practitioner communities.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
* Institutional drivers of IT enabled innovation
* Critical success factors in product and process innovation
* Motivation for organizational innovation in technology centric firms
* Frameworks for IT based organizational innovation
* Challenges for technological innovation in firms
* Measurement of technological innovation impacts for firms
* Technological innovation and its impact on productivity
* Challenges of IT based innovation in developed and emerging economies
* IT innovation challenges for bottom of the pyramid segments of the society
* IT innovation drivers for globalized multinationals
* Case studies on new models for IT innovation
* Assessment of IT based innovation models for organizations
