Call for papers

AMCIS 2015: 21st Americas Conference on Information Systems
Puerto Rico - August 13-15, 2015

http://amcis2015.aisnet.org

Papers are invited for the minitrack on “SOCIAL MEDIA, MOBILE LEARNING, AND SERIOUS GAMES: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR CREATIVE LEARNING" as part of the IS in Education, IS Curriculum, Education and Teaching Cases (SIGED) Track.

The learning environments evolved with the access to new technologies, communications and devices. For educators and course designers, the challenge is how they might use these technologies in the learning process and how they can create new and creative opportunities and environments that enhance learning.

Social Media (SM) enables the interaction among people allowing them to create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. It provides novel prospects in education as the learning paradigm is shifting toward network learning (connectivism). However, the reasonable integration of the social media in education asks for tools, methods, and best practices utilizing the potentials of the social media.

Mobile Learning (ML) has emerged as an enhanced learning model that would allow people to gain knowledge and to develop skills through electronic materials and activities available anytime and anywhere through mobile devices. Universities have launched mobile projects to teach a subject in innovative ways. Mobile apps are increasing the capabilities for learning and specialized educational apps are developed every day. The use of mobile learning is due largely to the new learning capabilities offered by mobile devices such as ubiquity, access, personalization, engagement and inclusion, control over learning, ownership and the ability to demand things.

Serious Games (SG) use computer-mediated environments to facilitate experiential learning by simulating a real life business environment, enabling participants to explore the complexities of a business problem, including the emotional challenges. Today, new perspectives are explored in different dimensions of the organization: human resources management (through recruitment and assessment), knowledge management or innovation.

The pedagogical integration needs to be clear for educators, isolated activities using SM, ML and SG will create enjoyable moments but the effect could be diminished if it is not clear why this activity was added to the learning process. Solely or as a combination, social media, mobile learning and serious games opens new and creative perspectives for education.

The “Social Media, Mobile Learning, and Serious Games: Opportunities and Challenges for Creative Learning” minitrack focuses on:

1. Theoretical foundations and practical approaches to understand, model, and design SM, ML and SG.
2. Methods, techniques, and best practices to support the adoption, the curricula inclusion of SM, ML and SG.
3. The design, application, and evaluation of SM, ML and SG.
4. SM, ML and SG assessments for creative learning.

There are no preferred methodological stances for this minitrack: this minitrack is open to both qualitative and quantitative research, to studies from the lab, from the field, or experimental designs.

Themes and topics of relevance to this minitrack include, but are not limited to (related topics not listed are especially welcome):

SM, ML and SG Opportunities and Challenges for creative learning.

- Use of SM, ML and SG in different fields: languages, sciences, business and engineering.
- Case studies on the implementation of SM, ML and SG in formal education and training settings.
- Measuring Learning Outcomes with SM, ML and SG.
- Research on SM, ML and SG individual and institutional adoption.
- Characteristics and evolution of socio-cultural approach.
- Strategies for including SM, ML and SG using instructional design.
