Dear Colleagues,
This is just a quick reminder that the WISE submission deadline is fast
approaching. Among other exciting things this year we have instituted a
best paper award and a best student authored paper award. These awards will
be judged by a distinguished panel of past WISE co-chairs, Marshall Van
Alstyne, Chris Forman and Rahul Telang. Many thanks to them for stepping up
and giving back to the WISE community.
So, please send in your best work and look forward to seeing you all in the
City of Sails, Auckland, NZ.
Please visit http://wiseconf.org/ to submit.

Dear IS Community:
It is time to rejuvenate the Salary Offer Survey for MIS hiring activity.
If you received a salary offer for a position you occupy this current academic year (2014-2015) for a new position as a new graduate, or in moving from one university to another, please fill out the offer survey now. It only takes a few minutes and all fields are optional but helpful for analysis. I still update the results manually, so sometimes you will see updates within a few minutes and sometimes it will take longer.
You may fill out the survey anonymously<http://www.pitt.edu/~galletta/salsurvanon.html> or non-anonymously<http://www.pitt.edu/~galletta/salsurvverif.html> or just see the results<http://www.pitt.edu/~galletta/salsurv.html>. I have no assistants who see any of my email, and so I will protect your information if it is non-anonymous. Some Deans do not consider anonymous entries to be valid, but even anonymous entries can be somewhat valuable.
So far this year we have 5 entries and I'm hoping to see this number grow substantially so we can offer a meaningful pool of data supported by our pivot table. I will launch the 2015-2016 survey in late November 2014.

Special Issue on *Software Engineering from a Social Network Perspective*
SpringerOpen Journal of Internet Services and Applications (JISA)
Paper Submission: October 15, 2014
*Guest editors:*
Marco Aurelio Gerosa (University of S?o Paulo) ? <gerosa at ime.usp.br>

*MOTIVATION *
In today?s Internet age, the concept of social networks is emerging as both
a useful means for understanding software engineering activities and a key
principle for designing software tools. Social networks model how people
communicate, coordinate, cooperate, and develop professional relationships,
which are critical activities for a software development project. Bringing
social networks to the foreground of software development practice brings a
focus to its stakeholders, including developers, their managers, their
support staff, QA analysts, requirement engineers, and even end users.
Social networks include investigation of both the social organization of
the work as well as the technical information infrastructures. The concept
also helps explore the notion of network-centric organizations that are
required to deal with socio-technical dependencies ? including handling the
relations and connections between complex software code, systems and
subsystems, requirement and specification documents, etc.
The structure of the social organization often dictates the technical
structure of the product, as stated in Conway?s Law, and is a topic of
ongoing research. Researchers are investigating the interplay of complex
interdependencies among technical artifacts and the people who create and
maintain these artifacts. Others have examined the relationships between
the stakeholders based on qualitative studies and have been developing
software tools to support awareness and trust in global software
development. As a last example, researchers have been studying the effects
of companies moving from hierarchical to network-centric ways of organizing
the work and looking to leverage expertise within companies.
However, the roles and practices involved with social networks within
software development as well as the technical challenges of social network
technologies within software development are yet to be further explored.
Thus, we seek submissions that employ the concept of social networks either
in studying software development from an empirical approach or use the
concept as a central basis for developing software tool support, or do
both! We seek submissions that investigate how social network technologies
are currently being enacted by software development practitioners, and how
the technology-in-use practices emerges. Current research on social network
in software engineering is spread across a diverse set of research
subareas, and we want to bring in this diverse set of approaches into this
special issue. We encourage authors to specifically discuss the definition
and background of their particular use of social networks in their work, as
well as how the concept was beneficial for exploring software development
practices and/or how designing collaborative technologies for software
development.
*SCOPE & TOPICS OF INTEREST*
Topics include but are not limited to the following:
- Data mining for social networks in software repositories
- Understanding software evolution from a social network perspective
- Social network analysis for enhancing specific aspects of software
engineering, such as bug prediction, expert recommendation, etc.
- Tools for supporting researchers and practitioners in analyzing social
networks in software projects and ecosystems
- Socio-technical networks in software development
- Enactment of social networks in software development
- Communication practices in social networks in software development
- Coordination practices and organization structure as they relate to
social network
- Information and knowledge sharing in social networks
- Interactions between awareness, visualization, and social networks
- The role of trust in software development as enacted in social networks
- Social networks analysis in open source software projects and ecosystems
- Large scale analysis of social networks in software ecosystems
- Patterns and anti-patterns in social networks in software development
- New requirements for supporting social network infrastructure, such as
middleware, frameworks, and cloud computing environments
- Technologies-in-use practices of social network within software
development organizations

Dear Colleagues,
There are requests to extend the deadline for paper submission to the
SIGPHIL workshop at ICIS 2014. It is now extended to Midnight, CST, Friday,
Sept 12.
If you're looking for an exciting program at ICIS 2014, I'd like to invite
you to the SIG Philosophy's popular evening workshop at ICIS this year
(below) featuring (in presentation order) Leslie Willcocks, David Avison,
Shirley Gregor, Rudy Hirschheim, and Allen Lee. These panelists will be
discussing interesting developments in IS theorizing. So if your ICIS
submission didn't quite get accepted, or just want to socialize with
thought leaders in IS, please consider attending this workshop and perhaps
submitting a paper (paper not required to attend workshop, deadline Sept
12) and you can get a friendly review before submitting to the new
Theorizing Track at ECIS in Germany. Dinner and intelligent conversations
included.
Looking forward to see you join us,
Nik R. Hassan
4th Concurrent ICIS-SIGPHIL Workshop on IS Theory: Whence Cometh, Whither
Goeth?
(Where does it come from and where is it going?)
In conjunction with the 2014 International Conference of Information
Systems (ICIS), the AIS Special Interest Group on Philosophy in Information
Systems (AIS-SIGPHIL) will hold its 4th Concurrent-ICIS SIGPHIL Research
Workshop during two evenings of the ICIS conference at the Auckland
Business School, Auckland, New Zealand. Although labeled as a workshop,
this event provides an opportunity to attend the ICIS conference and at the
same time spend quality time with thought leaders of the IS community in an
informal and friendly environment.
Workshop Presenters And Organizing Committee (in alphabetical order)
David Avison, Essec Business School, France
Shirley Gregor, Australian National University, Australia
Nik R. Hassan, University of Minnesota Duluth, USA
Rudy Hirschheim, Louisiana State University, USA
Allen Lee, Virginia Commonwealth University, USA
Alan Litchfield, Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand
Julien Malaurent, Essec Business School, France
Mary Tate, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
Leslie Willcocks, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK
Program
Although the question of IS theory has been discussed since the inception
of the field, this past few years has seen a growing interest in theory
building and theorizing within the IS community. This growing interest is
reflected in landmark articles (Gregor 2006; Gregor and Jones 2007),
panels (Grover
et al. 2012; Mueller et al. 2012), a new theorizing track at ECIS 2014,
discussions on how theories could be faithfully adapted from other
disciplines (Truex et al. 2006), whether or not IS actually has developed
native theories (Grover 2012; Straub 2012) and how to enhance theories and
theorizing in IS (Kuechler and Vaishnavi 2012; Mueller and Urbach 2013;
Weber 2012). Riding on this momentum, the 4th Concurrent ICIS-SIGPHIL 2014
Workshop will focus on what it means to have theories in IS, the need if
any for theory, possible "obsession" and proliferation of theory in IS, all
forms of theory, and where theory is heading in IS. The workshop will
explore these important issues surrounding theories and theorizing
beginning on the first evening with an introduction by Leslie Willcocks,
Editor-in-Chief of the *Journal of Information Technology* followed by a
keynote presentation by David Avison and Julien Malaurent on their recent
article, "Is theory king?: Questioning the theory fetish in Information
Systems" and Shirley Gregor's response, "Theory ? Still king but needing a
revolution!"
Most everyone will agree that research in IS should be truly original,
challenging and exciting, but as Avison and Malaurent (2014) note, that may
not be the case even in our leading journals. Is the emphasis on theory to
be blamed for this apparent triviality and restrictiveness of IS research?
Or do we need, as Avison and Malaurent (2014) propose, a lesser emphasis on
theory in the form of research that are "theory light" to bring IS out its
doldrums? Shirley Gregor will present in the panel her concerns that such
an approach may take the IS field down a "dangerous path" where theory
plays no significant part in research. Instead, she will explain the need
for better theorizing and epistemological maturity in research practices.
Rudy Hirschheim, representing the IS community, will present his views as
an observer of this debate that need to seriously consider all sides of the
argument. The panelists will then respond to questions and comments from
the audience.
The second evening of the workshop will feature a keynote presentation by
Allen Lee titled, "Theory is king. But first, what is theory?" elaborating
on lesser known forms of theory in IS, especially in qualitative and
interpretive research, that may be able address some of the concerns
discussed during the first evening panel. The keynote speech is followed by
comments from Leslie Willcocks and a question and answer session with the
audience. Several short paper presentations from the SIG Philosophy
community will close the program.

ACM IUI 2015: ACM Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Atlanta, GA, USA
March 29 - April 1, 2015
http://iui.acm.org/
ACM IUI 2015 is the 20th annual meeting of the intelligent interfaces
community and serves as a premier international forum for reporting
outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. ACM
IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the
Artificial Intelligence (AI) community. We are also very interested in
contributions from related fields, such as psychology, behavioral science,
cognitive science, computer graphics, design, the arts, etc.
Why submit to ACM IUI?
At ACM IUI, we focus on the interaction between machine intelligence and
human intelligence. While other conferences focus on one side or the other,
we address the complex interaction between the two. We welcome research
that explores how to make the interaction between computers and people
smarter, which may leverage solutions from data mining, knowledge
representation, novel interaction paradigms, and emerging technologies. We
strongly encourage submissions that discuss research from both HCI and AI
simultaneously, but also welcome works that focus more on one side or the
other.
The ACM IUI conference brings together people from academia, industry,
nonprofits and government, to showcase and discuss work results in an
intimate, focused, and interactive setting. We expect this year?s ACM IUI
to be attended by a diverse and livery crowd of over 200 attendees, a good
size that allows our attendees to strike up conversations and network with
other attendees, see all the posters, and take in all the presentations. As
an ACM conference, ACM IUI papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library
and citation indices. There will also be a journal publication path for
long papers. ACM IUI is a single-track conference, so you will not miss
anything!

**** New Cooperation Agreement between the ACM IUI Conference Series and
ACM TiiS ****
The steering committee of the ACM IUI conference series has agreed with the
editors-in-chief of the ACM TiiS on the following forms of collaboration
between the conference and the journal, which will be repeated in
subsequent years:
1. Authors of accepted ACM IUI 2015 full papers will have an opportunity to
submit extended versions to the ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent
Systems (TiiS, tiis.acm.org) for consideration for a special issue titled
"Highlights of ACM IUI 2015". One of the ACM IUI 2015 program chairs will
serve as an associate editor who manages the reviewing for that special
issue, and the reviewing schedule will ensure that it appears in the ACM
Digital Library in early 2016, before ACM IUI 2016. (For information on
what counts as an appropriate "extension" of a conference paper for TiiS,
see http://tiis.acm.org/for-authors.html#types-of-submission ).

at ACM IUI 2015 in a presentation slot at least as long as that for an ACM
IUI 2015 short paper.
