CALL FOR PAPERS

Software Infrastructure Management Strategies

Guest Editor: San Murugesan
<http://www.cutter.com/meet-our-experts/murugesans.html>

*	Abstract Deadline: 11 March 2015
*	Article Deadline: 17 April 2015

IT infrastructures are growing in size, capability and complexity as
organizations take advantage of cloud computing, big data analytics, the
Internet of Things, mobile computing and social media to deploy complex,
integrated, and collaborative applications. As a result, the need to run
several applications under varying workloads to meet different functional,
nonfunctional, and performance requirements is increasing.

Managing these new complex infrastructures via traditional means is
challenging and inefficient. Hence, many organizations are looking for new
directions and approaches to more efficiently manage their infrastructures
to meet their customers' growing demands, ensure adaptability to changing
business requirements, reduce duplication of efforts, and remain
competitive.

One approach organizations are adopting is software defined infrastructure
(SDI) or softwarization. With this approach, the elements of the
infrastructure including the data center, storage, network and service
functions are virtualized, enabling all requirements to be automatically
derived and created. SDI promises to increase the IT infrastructure's
flexibility and programmability, and to optimize processes, management and
costs. As with any new technology, it comes with risks. But it could be a
game-changer for infrastructure management.

Organizations need to rethink their current approaches to managing their
increasingly complex infrastructures. Adopting holistic system-oriented
approaches, not piecemeal solutions, is critical.

An upcoming issue of Cutter IT Journal will examine the issues and
challenges in managing the ever growing and changing IT landscape and
explore new approaches to infrastructure management.

Possible topics of discussion may include, but are not limited, to the
following:

. What are the challenges in managing the increasingly complex IT
landscape?

. What new strategies can help manage these challenges?

. How can SDI help manage growing infrastructures?

. Is SDI poised to change, and significantly transform,
infrastructure management in the coming years or is it just hype?

. How does a host of software-defined infrastructure models such as
a software defined data centre (SDDC), software defined storage (SDS),
software defined network (SDN), etc. work? What proprietary or open source
tools are available to support them? How can they be deployed?

. How can a smooth transition be made from traditional to modern
infrastructure management?

. What are the key issues, risks and challenges in adopting SDI or
other new approaches and strategies, and how can they be addressed?

. What are the user experience and user interface design issues and
challenges in infrastructure management?

. Are there any case studies that demonstrate successful approaches
to infrastructure management?

When you submit an article to Cutter Consortium, you warrant that you (or
your employer) are the sole owner of the article and that you have full
power and authority to copyright it and publish it. Also, the article you
submit to Cutter must be an original; not previously published elsewhere.
Articles published in the journal must meet certain criteria relating to

that, upon selection and editorial review, your completed article does not
meet with these requirements, Cutter Consortium reserves the right not to
publish your article in the journal.

AUDIENCE

Typical readers of CITJ range from CIOs and vice presidents of software
organizations to IT managers, directors, project leaders, and very senior
technical staff. Most work in fairly large organizations: Fortune 500 IT
shops, large computer vendors, and government agencies. 48% of our
readership is outside of the US (15% from Canada, 14% Europe, 5%
Australia/NZ, 14% elsewhere). Please avoid introductory-level, tutorial
coverage of a topic. Assume you're writing for someone who has been in the
industry for 10 to 20 years, is very busy, and very impatient. Assume he or
she will be asking, "What's the point? What do I do with this information?"
Apply the "So what?" test to everything you write.

PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

We are pleased to offer Journal authors a year's complimentary subscription
and five copies of the issue in which they are published. In addition, we
occasionally pull excerpts, along with the author's bio, to include in our
bi-weekly Cutter Edge e-mail bulletin, which reaches another 10,000 readers.
We may also quote you, or passages from your article, in Cutter press
releases. If you plan to be speaking at industry conferences, we can arrange
to make copies of your article available for attendees -- furthering your
own promotional efforts.
