*Job Summary*: The Head of the Department of Mathematical, Computing, and
Information Sciences (MCIS) leads JSU’s programs for the Bachelor of
Science with a major in Computer Science with three concentrations –
Information Assurance, Game Development, and General; the Bachelor of
Science with a major in Computer Information Systems with three
concentrations – Information Assurance, Web Development, and General; and a
major in Mathematics with three concentrations – Theoretical, Applied, and
General.  The Department Head also oversees the Master of Science in
Computer Systems and Software Design, studio or non-studio,  with two
concentrations – Information Security and Assurance, and General; and a
Master of Science in Mathematics, thesis or non-thesis. The Department Head
leads the department in program review, guides strategic planning, and
ensures the participation of faculty in teaching, research, publication,
and community service. Essential Functions: In addition to traditional
faculty responsibilities, the MCIS Department Head is responsible for
representing the department and its faculty; managing the departmental
budgets; planning curriculum; managing the departmental office and
personnel; and managing/planning faculty teaching loads and schedules. The
Head will teach as required, and will accept other duties as may be
assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or by University
policy. The successful candidate must be an academic leader with
established professional service, knowledge of current research in one or
more of the fields of the department, and the ability to foster
collegiality among the department faculty, the College, and the University
community. The Head must have proven ability to obtain and manage
extramural funds and must successfully manage and work with a diverse group
of people with varied interests, abilities and personalities. The
Department Head must have demonstrated administrative experience that
includes the leadership skills necessary to support and encourage faculty
teaching, research, and service commitments and to stimulate their pursuits
of professional development activities.



*Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:*

The Department Head must have knowledge of teaching, scholarly activity,
and service at the University level; possess knowledge of University
administration and managerial procedures and practices; have knowledge of
education law; have demonstrated ability to create/maintain effective
relationships on campus with students, faculty, staff and administrators;
have demonstrated ability to manage the fiscal and human resources; have
demonstrated ability to read documents, written in English, encountered on
the job; and show ability to communicate effectively (in speaking and
writing) to individuals and groups, including public speaking; and have
computer knowledge needed for administrative work

*Minimum Qualifications:*

1) Candidates must have an earned doctorate in computer science, computer
information systems, or the mathematical sciences.

2) A minimum of five years of experience as a tenure line faculty member in
a regionally accredited college or university or an internationally
accredited college or university is required.

3) The successful candidate will have credentials commensurate with those
of a tenured associate or full professor and will have a substantial record
of research, teaching, and leadership.

4)A minimum of one year fulltime equivalent administrative experience, such
as department head, program leader, graduate coordinator, curriculum
coordinator or similar responsibility is required.
