*Tenure track - Assistant professor in Business Intelligence & analytics*
(1,0 FTE) Tenure track (4 years)
Vacancy number *FAC/MST/15020*
At the end of the year 2014 APG, the Province of Limburg (Netherlands),
and Maastricht University decided to establish the Smart Services Campus
(SSC) in Heerlen. The SSC will develop into an eco-system with both a
highly innovative character in smart services, and a learning
environment in which top talent can be attracted, developed, and
flourish. The eco-system will entail large corporations, innovative
SMEs, knowledge institutes, research institutes, and start-ups and
student ventures. As part of the SSC the Expertise & Innovation
Centre Business Intelligence and Smart Service (BISS) will be developed.
The BISS will become an essential institute of knowledge development and
innovation within the SSC playing a pivotal role in the SSC. The BISS is
a collaboration of three knowledge institutions in the province of
Limburg: Maastricht University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, and
the Open University Netherlands. It is fully embedded in the Smart
Services Campus, where IT/Business Intelligence related companies (e.g.
APG, Accenture, Conclusion) cooperate with BISS to develop new smart
services in a diversity of functional areas such as Finance, Marketing,
Health Care and Smart Cities.
The assistant professor in business intelligence & analytics will work
within the Innovation theme of BISS. This theme focuses on developing
innovations in processes, products and services that result in added
value for organizations. An important resource to realize such
innovations is (big) data.
We expect the candidate to be passionate about research and will
initiate research that aims to develop search strategies that guarantee
effective exploration of big data sources. These search strategies
should be translated into a computer model, based on (for instance)
machine learning, which can initiate searches, and is able to
distinguish real insights from spurious correlations that are easily
found in big data sets. Besides presenting valuable insights, it should
also be able to give some information on the search strategy used and
how it arrived at the results. One of the attributes of the system
should be self-learning so that its performance increases over time.
The candidate will also be active in valorisation and education in the
area of business intelligence & analytics. He/she will develop teaching
programs and course materials at bachelor and master level in business
intelligence, business informatics and shared services, including the
design of courses, designing and grading exams, and supervision of
bachelor and master theses, and internships. He/she will contribute to
expertise teams of BISS in close collaboration with industry, and will
publish in respectable conferences and journals. Furthermore the
candidate will write grant applications and attract research funding.
He/she will supervise PhD students and post-docs. He/she will also take
part in the administration of BISS and be active in the development of
the identity and image of BISS as a center.

*Studying online anywhere in the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders)
*The Open Universiteit (OU) is the university where students study
online. Students of the OU combine their study with other activities,
usually a job. Characteristics of the education are openness,
flexibility and high quality. Students can follow bachelor and master
degree programmes in seven fields of study. More than 17.000 students
are studying at the OU and the OU has 650 employees. The OU has a
network of sixteen regional study centres in the Netherlands and six in
Belgium (Flanders). The head office is situated in Heerlen.
The most advanced technologies and educational insights are applied in
our bachelor and master programmes, our courses and also in projects and
tailored programmes with partners.
Both nationally and internationally the OU plays a key role in the
innovation of higher education. Education and research are closely
interrelated which guarantees state of the art scientific knowledge in
our programs. Our students learn and integrate all aspects of academic
theory that reflect the latest insights in each of the specific
disciplines we offer. The OU not only invests in research in the various
academic disciplines, but also in research in learning sciences and
learning technologies which contributes to theinnovation of higher
education.
*Satisfied students and employees*
For five years in a row the OU has the highest score of all Dutch
universities in the National Student Survey: students of the OU are most
satisfied about their study compared to students of the other thirteen
universities. The OU and the programmes are also highly valued in the
Dutch university guides ’Keuzegidsen’: best university 2015 with 4 top
bachelor and 2 top master programmes 2015. Moreover, in the rankings of
best companies to work for the OU ranks second (category 500 and more
employees for young employees until 35 years). The Monitor at work index
shows that younger employees are positive about the excellent resources
of the OU: variety and variation in work, autonomy in work, learning
possibilities and a positive work atmosphere. **
*Faculty of Management, Science & Technology*
The faculty of Management, Science & Technology (MST) offers academic
bachelor and master programmes in the fields of management,
environmental science and information science. Additionally the faculty

programs), who aim to gain more in-depth knowledge. At the faculty of
MST students can immediately reflect on what they learn in the light of
their work situation (apply the theory in practice). In the organisation
they work they can perform assignments and research. Thus scientific
work at this faculty provides challenging opportunities to connect
education, research and business.
Education, research and valorisation are the main tasks of the faculty.
In the National Student Survey 2014 the bachelor and master programmes
of this faculty receive high satisfaction scores and the bachelors
Business Administration, Environmental Sciences and Information Science
reach first places in their studies.
Apart from the students in our 4 bachelor and 5 master programs, the
faculty also runs a successful PhD-program, which contains currently
more than 50 PhD students.
