At the end of the year 2014 APG, the Province of Limburg (Netherlands), and Maastricht University decided to establish the Smart Services Campus (SSC) in Heerlen. The SSC will develop into an eco-system with both a highly innovative character in smart services, and a learning environment in which top talent can be attracted, developed, and flourish. The eco-system will entail large corporations, innovative SMEs, knowledge institutes, research institutes, and start-ups and student ventures. As part of the SSC the Expertise & Innovation Centre Business Intelligence and Smart Service (BISS) will be developed. The BISS will become an essential institute of knowledge development and innovation within the SSC playing a pivotal role in the SSC. The BISS is a collaboration of three knowledge institutions in the province of Limburg: Maastricht University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, and the Open University Netherlands. It is fully embedded in the Smart Services Campus, where IT/Business Intelligence related companies (e.g. APG, Accenture, Conclusion) cooperate with BISS to develop new smart services in a diversity of functional areas such as Finance, Marketing, Health Care and Smart Cities. 
 
The assistant professor in business intelligence & analytics will work within the Innovation theme of BISS. This theme focuses on developing innovations in processes, products and services that result in added value for organizations. An important resource to realize such innovations is (big) data.
We expect the candidate to be passionate about research and will initiate research that aims to develop search strategies that guarantee effective exploration of big data sources. These search strategies should be translated into a computer model, based on (for instance) machine learning, which can initiate searches, and is able to distinguish real insights from spurious correlations that are easily found in big data sets. Besides presenting valuable insights, it should also be able to give some information on the search strategy used and how it arrived at the results. One of the attributes of the system should be self-learning so that its performance increases over time.
The candidate will also be active in valorisation and education in the area of business intelligence & analytics. He/she will develop teaching programs and course materials at bachelor and master level in business intelligence, business informatics and shared services, including the design of courses, designing and grading exams, and supervision of bachelor and master theses, and internships. He/she will contribute to expertise teams of BISS in close collaboration with industry, and will publish in respectable conferences and journals. Furthermore the candidate will write grant applications and attract research funding. He/she will supervise PhD students and post-docs. He/she will also take part in the administration of BISS and be active in the development of the identity and image of BISS as a center.
 
Requirements
- PhD or equivalent advanced degree in a field relevant to business intelligence and analytics.
- Talent for research in business intelligence and analytics, proven by publication record.
- Positive, people-oriented and energetic attitude
- Analytical, creative and innovative approach to solving problems
- Strong written and verbal communication skills (in Englisch and Dutch, or acquire sufficient proficiency in Dutch in one year).
- Team player that can work in multi-disciplinary teams
- Willing to acquire the basic teaching qualification (BKO) as is required by Dutch universities.
 
Salary
The maximum salary for a permanent and full-time position is €5.171,- gross per month (salary scale 12) in accordance with VSNU standards and depending upon your qualifications and experience.
 
Station
BISS Institute, Smart Services Campus Heerlen (approximately 4 days per week) and Open University (approximately 1 day per week)

Faculty of Management, Science & Technology
The faculty of Management, Science & Technology (MST) offers academic bachelor and master programmes in the fields of management, environmental science and information science. Additionally the faculty offers short programmes for professionals (certified professional programs), who aim to gain more in-depth knowledge. At the faculty of MST students can immediately reflect on what they learn in the light of their work situation (apply the theory in practice). In the organisation they work they can perform assignments and research. Thus scientific work at this faculty provides challenging opportunities to connect education, research and business.
Education, research and valorisation are the main tasks of the faculty. In the National Student Survey 2014 the bachelor and master programmes of this faculty receive high satisfaction scores and the bachelors Business Administration, Environmental Sciences and Information Science reach first places in their studies. 
Apart from the students in our 4 bachelor and 5 master programs, the faculty also runs a successful PhD-program, which contains currently more than 50 PhD students.
