CALL FOR PAPERS
* Special Issue of the Journal of Management Information Systems *
Information Systems Action Research

SPECIAL ISSUE CO-EDITORS
David Avison, ESSEC Business School, Paris, France
Ned Kock, Texas A&M International University, Laredo, USA
Julien Malaurent, ESSEC Business School, Paris, France

The main goal of this Special Issue on Information Systems Action Research of
the Journal of Management Information Systems is to demonstrate how action
research synergistically associates research and practice in a holistic manner
so that researchers inform practitioners and vice versa.

This Special Issue aims to publish a set of exemplars of empirical studies
(from any epistemological stance) employing information systems action
research. Consistent with the requirements of JMIS, each accepted paper will
be expected to make a significant novel contribution to the discipline.
Submissions must clearly demonstrate the potential of action research to
generate novel, unexpected, and potentially high-impact insights in the field
of information systems. With this main goal in mind, submissions may also
incorporate one or more of the following elements, but such contributions must
synergistically contribute to our understanding of the empirical study:

•	Distinctions and commonalities between information systems action research
and other forms of engaged scholarship such as design science, action design
research, and ethnographic research.

•	Consolidated discussions of various types of information systems action
research, emphasizing those that remain as apparently distinct in terms of how
they are conducted, represented and/or evaluated.

•	Discussions of ontological and epistemological foundations of information
systems action research, complemented by methodological toolkits to support
action research investigations.

•	Scholarly descriptions of mixed method approaches used in particular
information systems research projects; e.g. action research with experimental
or survey research, or action research following case study research.

•	Descriptions of team information systems action research projects (perhaps
virtual teams) where different investigators contribute their action research
study to the whole.

•	Discussions of theoretical contributions of information systems action
research, with examples showing how theory might be constructed and further
validated.

•	Demonstrations of what rigor means in the context of information systems
action research; e.g., how the theoretical basis of a practical solution is
grounded, and how it might contribute to theory extension or theory
development.

•	Discussions of relationships between information systems researchers and
research clients – e.g., senior academics and executives – demonstrating how
action research can lead to improved organizational situations.
