Fully funded PhD Studentship - Autonomy vs. Control: Understanding the Optimal Fit for Mobile Workers and Organisations

The explosion of mobile and smart technology is revolutionising the way mobile workers think about, adopt and use technology both at home and in the workplace. This is an exciting period for researchers interested in understanding how technology can be used to either empower or increase control over mobile workers. This is a key business challenge as operating a controlled approach enables organisations to flex resources and respond to demand, but may reduce levels of job satisfaction among mobile workers. By contrast, an empowering approach may lead to higher levels of job satisfaction and positive attitudes toward technology, but reduce the speed of organisational responses to sudden changes in demand, such as emergency situations or telecommunication network outages.

In this research project you will investigate the optimal balance between empowerment and control for mobile workers working in contrasting industry sectors. You will be expected to consider both employee and organisational perspectives to deliver a new framework that will help organisations strike the right balance between employee job satisfaction and organisational flexibility.

You will join a vibrant community of over 40 international doctoral researchers at the Centre for Information Management, access research training delivered by internationally acclaimed senior scholars, and have the opportunity to present outcomes from the study at international conferences. Additional funding to support conference attendance will be available to you and doctoral students also have the opportunity to teach up six hours a week in a relevant area to gain valuable teaching experience.

Applications are invited for the above studentship commencing 1st October 2015. The Studentship is open to home/EU and international/overseas students. It will run for 3 years, and it includes:

	• A fee waiver equivalent to the home/EU rate*
	• Tax-free stipend of £14,057p.a. for three years

 * Please note that international/overseas students will be required to find funding to cover the difference between home/EU fees.
