SPECIAL ISSUE ON Big Data Analytics and Business Process Innovation

Business Process Management Journal

Guest Editor:

Dr Samuel Fosso Wamba

Associate Professor, NEOMA Business School, France

Invited Professor, UNISA, South Africa

Introduction:
Big data analytics (BBA) or the"collection of data and technology that accesses, integrates, and reports all available data by filtering, correlating, and reporting insights not attainable with past data technologies" (APICS 2012), is emerging as the "next big thing" in management. Some scholars have gone so far as suggesting that BBA is the "next management revolution"(McAfee and Brynjolfsson 2012), and thus generating huge attention from both practitioners and academics. Some analysts estimate that BBA-enabled process improvement may lead to about 26% average performance improvement over a three years period (Capgemini 2012). However, very few empirical studies have been conducted to assess the real business value of BBA at the firm and supply chain levels.

The main objective of this workshop to invite scholars and practitioners to look at the ways and means to identify and capture business value from BDA in terms of innovative business models, improved decisions making, improved intra-and inter-organizational performance, and competitive advantage.

Recommended Topics:

The topics to be discussed in this special issue include but are not limited to the following:

* Big data analytics enabled-business process innovation at the firm and supply chain levels

* Assessment of the effect of big data analytics on the decision-making processes in operations

* Assessment of facilitators and inhibitors of big data analytics adoption for supply chain management processes

* In-depth & longitudinal case studies and pilot studies on the implementation of IT infrastructure to support big data initiatives for improved operations management, lean & agile operations, quality management in operations and supply chain management

* Facilitation of innovative electronic business models and operations by using big data analytics in various sectors (e.g., healthcare, retail industry, and manufacturing)

* Enabling smart cities, smart organizations and smart homes using big data analytics

* New theory development to explain the adoption and use of big data in operations at the organizational and inter-organizational levels

* Challenges related to big data analytics-enabled end-to-end supply chain transformation

Submission Procedure

Prospective authors are invited to submit papers for this special thematic issue on "Big Data Analytics and Business Process Innovation" on or before November 30, 2015. All submissions must be original and may not be under review by another publication. INTERESTED AUTHORS SHOULD CONSULT THE JOURNAL'S GUIDELINES FOR MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSIONS at http://www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/products/journals/author_guidelines.htm?id=bpmj PRIOR TO SUBMISSION at: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/bpmj .

About Business Process Management Journal

Business processes are a fundamental building block of organizational success. Even though effectively managing business process is a key activity for business prosperity, there remain considerable gaps in understanding how to drive efficiency through a process approach. Building a clear and deep understanding of the range process, how they function, and how to manage them is the major challenge facing modern business.

Business Process Management Journal (BPMJ) examines how a variety of business processes intrinsic to organizational efficiency and effectiveness are integrated and managed for competitive success. BPMJ builds a deep appreciation of how to manage business processes effectively by disseminating best practice. Coverage includes:

* BPM in eBusiness, eCommerce and eGovernment

*         Web-based enterprise application integration

* eBPM, ERP, CRM, ASP & SCM

* Knowledge management and learning organization

* Methodologies, techniques and tools of business process modeling, analysis and design

* Techniques of moving from one-shot business process re-engineering to continuous improvement

*         Best practices in BPM

*         Performance management

* Tools and techniques of change management

*         BPM case studies

City University of Hong Kong
Vacancy: Tenure-track Position for Assistant Professor or Associate
Professor; Visiting Position

Position

The Department of Information Systems at the College of Business of the City
University of Hong Kong invites applications for (1) one or more
tenure-track position(s) at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate
Professor and (2) one or more visiting position(s), beginning in July 2016.
Candidates must have received a doctorate in Information Systems or a
related area by July 2016.

For tenure-track positions, candidates must also have a strong commitment to
high-quality research and excellent teaching. For appointments at the
Associate Professor level, a substantial track record of research
publications in top-tier journals is essential. For appointments at the
Assistant Professor level, strong indication of the ability to publish in
top tier journals is critical.

Visiting appointment(s) will take a relatively heavier teaching load as
compared to those at tenure-track positions. Satisfactory prior teaching
experience will be valuable.

Successful candidates should have the ability to teach at both graduate
(MBA/MSc) and undergraduate (BBA) levels, and be able to effectively teach
large freshman classes in the Introduction to Information Management with a
strong emphasis on IT applications. Hence the demonstrated capacity to
motivate students to appreciate the value of innovative information
management on businesses in the Internet era and to excite them about
developing a career in business information services will be highly
valuable. Ability to teach other courses in Information Systems and/or
having experience in administrative work is a plus.

CityU's College of Business and Department of Information Systems

CityU's College of Business was the first business school in the
Asia-Pacific region to obtain triple accreditations by AACSB, the European
Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) and the Association of MBAs. With about
40 research and teaching staff, the Department of Information Systems is one
of the largest among such departments in the world. Our research
productivity has been ranked highly. In 2008, the Department was ranked 6th
Worldwide and the second outside the USA (Communications of the ACM). Most
recently, CityU is ranked No. 3 in the Dallas List based on research
contribution in Information Systems Journals (MIS Quarterly, Information
Systems Research, and Journal on Computing) in 2012 - 2015
(http://jindal.utdallas.edu/the-utd-top-100-business-school-research-ranking

**********************************************************

Deadline for Poster Submissions: 25th, September, 2015

Background and Scope
=======================
While most research in recommender systems is conducted in recommendation
techniques, which boils down to rating prediction algorithms, there is
still little
discussion on the impact of the supported user interaction and its effect
on the
decision making behaviors that are enabled and supported. User
interactions and
decision-making are however critical in recommender system research. Hence
it is
important to design the interaction while understanding its impact on the
user
decision-making behavior and heuristic in order to support an effective
process.
Therefore with this workshop we aim to go beyond recommendation techniques
and
algorithm evaluations and further merit the research attention from both
recommender
systems and human factor.

Invited Speakers
=======================
Joseph Konstan, University of Minnesota, USA
Invited Talk: User Experience and New Ways of Recommending

Bamshad Mobasher, DePaul University, USA

Poster submissions
=================
We call for extended abstracts, and hands-on demonstrations. All
submissions will be
reviewed by the conference organisers. While promoting the presentation of
novel,
even if, not completely validated ideas and theories. Hence, preference
will be
given to innovative, truly interdisciplinary work, bridging the research
gap between
recommender system and user decision making.

Each submission should be max 4 pages including the references. The
submissions
should be formatted using Springer LNCS Format

Submission Deadline: 25th September 2015
The notification will be on a rotating basis, early submission is encouraged.

Special Issue on

Role of Knowledge and Learning Systems in fostering Work-Life Balance

Email: murali.raman at mmu.edu.my

Rapid and constant growth of technology has transformed our world into a
knowledge society. Knowledge and learning systems play an evident role in
business sustainability. Work force has evolved from traditional single
skilled to multi skilled personnel who juggle various tasks in a single
role. Thus, the need to promote lifelong learning, e-learning and on the
job training to constantly keep the workforce well equipped with the
current skills required by the industry. Latest research reveals immense
importance in introducing Knowledge Management (KM) ideas to e-learning
systems. It is disputed that KM can facilitate an e-learning system,
whereby the collaboration between e-learning and KM will provide the single
goal of organizational learning. KM is an integration of enormous number of
endeavours and fields of study from the application of new technology to
the harnessing of the intellectual capital of an organisation (Boswell &
Olson, 2007).

Work-Life Balance is a method of balancing the pressure of work with family
and social lifestyle demands (Cabanac & Hartley, 2013). This topic has been
debated over years but in the present important aspect of human resource
and retaining employees. Current work methods have lead employees to be
overly stressed and leading unhealthy lifestyle practices to sustain their
work needs as compared to personal and family engagements. However, the
availability of KM and sound learning systems may have a role to play in
providing employees a better work-life balance.

In this note, we consider an opportunity to see growth in studies that
relate to the role of KM and Learning Systems in enhancing employee
work-life balance. The topics of interest include the following but are not
limited:

   - Information systems management
   - Life Long Learning
   - e-Learning and Job based Training
   - Knowledge based systems
   - Impact of technology in sustaining Work-Life Balance (WLB)
   - Work-Life Balance challenges for employees, employers and policy-makers
   - Enhancing employee Work-Life Balance, in sustaining or enhancing
   organisational effectiveness

We are interested in both theoretical and practical papers that aim to
improve work-life balance through the utilization of KM and Learning
Systems.
