Insight Centre for Data Analytics (www.insight-centre.org)
National University of Ireland, Galway (www.nuigalway.ie)

Information sources of today produce a significant proportion of data that
is non-structured in nature. Images from mobile cameras, sounds and voices
are all examples of data that is increasing in volume and variety. Such big
data represents an opportunity for applications such as urban planning,
traffic management, and energy efficient smart lighting. But it also forms
a challenge to current information processing paradigms, as it needs to be
processed automatically in real-time in addition to other structured and
semi-structured sources to reach situation awareness of interest.

The PhD candidate is expected to develop novel models for processing event
data that can account for multimedia events data at the middleware layer,
new language and semantic models for multimedia event processing and
analytics, and scalable processing and optimization matching and routing
architectures and algorithms. The candidate is also expected to ground the
work in current state-of-the-art in the middleware and event processing
research and come up with scientifically valid evaluation datasets and
frameworks.

The PhD candidate should have:
- Four years Bachelor’s degree or Master’s Degree in Computer Science or
equivalent.
- Good technical skills and previous experience with stream processing,
distributed systems, middleware systems, Internet of Things, or real-time
processing is a bonus.
- Good knowledge of one or more of the following topics: computer vision,
image processing, artificial intelligence, ontologies, statistical and
distributional semantics, RDF, semantic web and relevant topics is a bonus.

The PhD fellowship offers for the successful candidate an annual stipend of
€18,000 tax-free plus course fees and conference travel when presenting

Insight is a leading research institute in semantic technologies offers a
stimulating, dynamic and multi-cultural research environment, excellent
ties to research-groups worldwide and close collaboration with industrial
partners.

Applicants must be highly motivated with the ability for independent and
critical thought. Successful applicants are expected to combine formal
scientific work with research and development in collaborative projects
funded by national and European funding agencies.

Please submit your application (including cover letter outlining
suitability, a brief outline of your preferred methodology, full CV and
contact details for three referees) to edward.curry at insight-centre.org with
the subject line ‘PhD Fellowship in Events.

Interviews will be carried out as applications are received via Skype
conference call, and the position can be filled as soon as a suitable
candidate is identified.
