The PhD program in Information Systems for Data Science track at the College of Management, UMass Boston is accepting applications for admission beginning Fall 2016.
Program Description and Overview
The Information Systems for Data Science doctoral program of study is a specialization of the Ph.D. in Business Administration program administered by the College of Management at UMass Boston. The Data Science field is growing rapidly, creating a need for professionals who can use insights derived from big data to make effective business decisions. Data analytics has become a critical need in industries ranging from health care and financial services to marketing and government. Leveraging the strengths of the College of Management's faculty, the University of Massachusetts Boston is offering a cutting-edge and flexible doctoral program in this field.

Positioned at the intersection of technology, business, and strategy, our program allows students to have a holistic view of data science and the role it plays in competition. Students will get exposed to a variety of state-of-art research streams in information systems and data science, with a relative focus on both data analytical techniques from a design science perspective and the application and management of data analytics in business settings from an organizational perspective. All students engage actively in research projects with faculty.

The program requires coursework for the first two years, followed by dissertation-related research. In their coursework, students explore a range of courses in statistics and research methods to develop their methodological skills, and department offers a number of seminars focusing on conceptual Information Systems foundations and emerging research topics. From the start, doctoral students work with multiple faculty to gain familiarity with their research interests, and in combination with their coursework this provides students with the theoretical knowledge and methodological skills needed to become productive researchers and to achieve successful careers. The department's faculty are active researchers publishing in top-tier journals such as Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, Management Science and various other leading journals. Some of the current research areas of faculty include Big Data, Social Media and Innovation, Healthcare IT, Cybersecurity, IT Strategy, Risk management, among others.

Admission:
The application deadline is January 15, 2016. Accepted students are eligible for Ph.D. assistantships, which include full tuition and fee waivers along with an annual stipend of $25,000 for the first three years.
