We are looking for an outstanding PhD student for the following project:

Title: Machine Learning for Malware Detection, Classification and
Protection in Mobile Devices

The proliferation of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets has
created a new age of ubiquitous computing. These mobile devices can be
found in our everyday life and are used extensively by most of us. The
popularity of mobile devices, however, has not gone unnoticed by malicious
attackers. There are already well-documented cases of malicious software
(malware) that silently steals user information and/or creates havoc in
mobile devices (e.g., DroidDream, which was discovered in over 50
applications on the official Android platform in March 2011). To make
things worse, researchers also found that Android’s built-in security
features are largely insufficient, and that even non-malicious programs can
(unintentionally) expose confidential information. In this project,
investigations into the role of machine learning for detecting and
classifying malware in mobile devices will be carried out. In addition, the
project will develop novel approaches with the aim to protect mobile
devices from malware. This project involves various stages of work, which
include code analysis, feature selection and extraction, classifier
selection and optimisation, as well as development of malicious protection
techniques.
