Persuasive Technology (PT) is a vibrant interdisciplinary research field, focusing on the design, development and evaluation of interactive technologies aimed at changing people’s attitudes or behaviors through persuasion and social influence, but not through coercion or deception. The 11th international conference on Persuasive Technologies will be held in the heart of Europe, in the beautiful city of Salzburg, Austria. 


Workshop: EMPOWERING CITIES FOR SUSTAINABLE WELLBEING

Future cities will reshape human behavior in countless ways. Persuasive urban systems will play an important role in making cities more livable and resource-efficient by addressing current environmental problems and enabling healthier routines. Therefore, future research should be directed towards exploring how urban design might be combined with persuasive technology and socially influencing systems to encourage healthy behaviors at scale. More effort has to be put into studying how quality of life and the health of the individual and communities might be improved through the creation of persuasive cities, streets, buildings, homes, and vehicles. Information technology and computer systems are increasingly designed to support everyday routines and advance user experience in multiple ways. Novel computer systems can be also intentionally designed to influence how users think and behave. Theories of persuasion and social influence provide various strategies for the developers of such systems to facilitate desired effects on users.

Design Jam: GAMES AS SOCIALLY INFLUENCING SYSTEMS

For the first time we will host a Design Jam at Persuasive Technologies 2016. The idea behind this design jam is to create games and playful interactive objects that act as persuasive artifacts in various social settings. Prototypical implementations of game designs will be accomplished in a one-day workshop and presented at the conference. Games and play accomplish to connect people by letting them communicate and interact with each other. Games are often based on a combination of various social influence principles such as competition, cooperation, recognition and learning. Incorporating these aspects into specific game mechanics offers great potential for designers of persuasive technology to generate impact. Thus, understanding and using games as socially influencing systems can be an insightful perspective and starting point for designers.
