The Role of KM in Healthcare

Knowledge management in healthcare is challenging for all involved stakeholders. The rate of growth of the elderly population, particularly in western countries is increasing the challenges for collaboration, knowledge management and socio-technical infrastructures in healthcare. Healthcare organizations need to collaborate to provide qualitative and patient-centered services and also need to integrate ICT with the knowledge management infrastructure. It is critical that healthcare organizations develop and manage knowledge structures and integrate knowledge to improve their practices and processes. Patients are also becoming more educated and empowered, and should be informed and involved in decision-making. Technologies and ICT-based information systems are often used as a means of creating and delivering appropriate knowledge services. Professionals are engaged in designing new forms of knowledge structures between caregivers and within the healthcare networks. However, we need to identify the barriers and drivers for developing and implementing ICT-technologies to support the work of professionals within complex healthcare practices. The theme of this track provides an ideal opportunity to discuss the challenges, barriers, drivers and transformations in relation to knowledge management and the use of ICT-based information systems within the healthcare industry.

Suggested topics include but are not limited to:

  * Drivers and barriers for knowledge management in health care performance with increasing demands
  * Challenges and improvements of collaboration of health caregivers through ICT
  * Challenges in integrating a health care knowledge infrastructure with ICT
  * Improving knowledge management within health care through ICT
  * Empowering and involving the patients in the collaboration and learning using ICT

Best regards,
Ann Svensson, Mini Track Chair
