PhD Fellowship in Sustainable Smart Cities

Doctoral students/researchers are being sought to join a large
research team which will be undertaking an exciting six-year,
SFI-funded research programme under the aegis of Lero, the Irish
Software Research Centre which brings together leading software
engineering (SE) teams from Universities and Institutes of Technology
in a coordinated centre of research excellence with a strong industry
focus. Lero has raised the level and profile of Irish software
engineering research with such effect that it is now one of the best
known and highly regarded SE research centres in the world. See more

The successful PhD candidates will:

* Have at least a 2.1 (Hons) degree and/or a Masters in Information
Systems, Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related
discipline.

* Good technical skills and experience with distributed systems,
stream processing, Internet of Things, or real-time processing is a
bonus. * Good knowledge of one or more of the following topics:
Internet of Things, Open Data, Sustainability, and Smart Cities.

* Have at least experience of working in an applied research field

* Have some experience in managing and analysing both quantitative and
qualitative data

* Be an effective and highly motivated team player as well as
possessing initiative and the ability to work independently

* Possess strong oral, written and analytical skills

* Have well developed interpersonal and organisational skills

* Have an interest in and/or a good working knowledge of, undertaking
applied real world research

Principal Duties/Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be required to carry out a four-year
structured PhD that will focus on an integral part of the project as
well as engaging in a range of other duties as part of the Lero team.
These will include, but are not limited to the following:

* Contribute to aspects of study design and implementation in
collaboration with the other members of the project team in Lero

* Contribute to data collection at all research sites

* Contribute to the analysis and interpretation of data (quantitative
and qualitative)

* Liaise effectively with participants and a wide range of stakeholders

* Work to tight deadlines and have an ability to cope with
simultaneous tasks/activities

* Contribute papers for publication in high quality peer-reviewed
journals etc. and engaging in other forms of dissemination as and when
required

Specific Focus Areas

* The identification and quantification of the environmental benefits
of IT-Enabled Smart City solutions, which will require development,
implementation, evaluation of Smart City sustainability platforms and
ecosystems using Internet of Things and Open Data

* Exploring multi-level models for Green Information Systems within
the design of a Smart City.

The PhD fellowship offers for the successful candidate an annual
stipend of 18,000 EUR tax-free plus course fees and conference travel
when presenting

Applicants must be highly motivated with the ability for independent
and critical thought. Successful applicants are expected to combine
formal scientific work with research and development in collaborative
projects funded by national and European funding agencies.
