Since President George W. Bush’s 2004 call for the widespread adoption of electronic medical records in the United States, the use of information technology (IT) in healthcare has greatly intensified. IT has been increasingly viewed as a medium for improving healthcare outcomes. If effectively implemented and efficiently leveraged, these technologies are expected to greatly lower healthcare costs, increase legibility, improve safety, elevate the overall quality of health, and even create new business models involving providers, payers, and patients. No doubt several industrialised nations are now making significant investments in healthcare, costing a substantial portion of their national gross domestic product. However, this trend warrants a careful investigation.

The purpose of this special issue is to:

 Publish quality research demonstrating the role of IS in all areas of healthcare, including but not limited to operations management, quality of care, patient and/or physician experience, cost management, performance improvement, and

 Articulate an agenda for IS research in the healthcare area.
