Exergaming for Physical Activity in Online Physical Education

Brian J. Kooiman (Lake Elsinore Unified School District, Riverside County, CA, USA), Dwayne P. Sheehan (Mount Royal University, Calgary, Canada), Michael Wesolek (Trident University International, Cypress, CA, USA), Eliseo Reategui (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil)

For many the thought of students taking an online course conjures up images of students sitting at a computer desk. Students taking online physical education (OLPE) at home may lack opportunities for competitive or cooperative physical activity that are available to students in a traditional setting. Active video games (exergames) can be played over the internet between students. Exergames allow for a new and possibly effective genre of physical activity that offers OLPE students the opportunity to interact in relevant, engaging, and entertaining physical activity with other students. Secondary student (N=124) heart rates were recorded before exergaming, after playing a non-player character, and after playing another student remotely over the internet. The results show that exergaming between students over the internet can raise student heart rates to moderate levels of physical intensity commensurate with guidelines for Physical Intensity for secondary students. Exergames show promise for physical activity in an OLPE course when played against a non-player character and a remote partner.

The Development and Implementation of U-Msg for College Students' English Learning

Yuh-Ming Cheng (Department of Computers and Information Engineering, Shu-Te University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan), Sheng-Huang Kuo (Fortune Institute of Technology, Kaohsiung, Taiwan), Shi-Jer Lou (Graduate Institute of Technical and Vocational Education, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, Pingtung, Taiwan), Ru-Chu Shih (National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, Pingtung, Taiwan)

With the advance of mobile technology, mobile devices have become more portable and powerful with numerous useful tools in daily life. Thus, mobile learning has been widely involved in e-learning studies. Many studies point out that it is important to integrate both pedagogical and technical strengths of mobile technology into learning settings. Thus, the purpose of this study aims to investigate the effects of implementing a ubiquitous multimedia message transmitting platform (U-Msg) for college students' English learning. 19 college students participated in a four-week experiment and each student used client-side application platform U-Msg platform for English learning through an Android-based mobile phone. After the experiment, a survey questionnaire with 22 questions was administered. The findings of this study show that those participants hold significantly positive attitude of U-Msg platform, including platform quality, learning content, platform support, platform usefulness, user satisfaction, and platform use. That is, this U-Msg platform for English learning can be effective and suitable for college students' English learning.

Automating a Massive Online Course with Cluster Computing

Timothy C. Haas (Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI, USA)

Before massive numbers of students can take online courses for college credit, the challenges of providing tutoring support, answers to student-posed questions, and the control of cheating will need to be addressed. These challenges are taken up here by developing an online course delivery system that runs in a cluster computing environment and is designed to support the delivery of a course having 10K or more students. This delivery system enhances synchronous and asynchronous lectures, provides an online intelligent tutoring system, and detects plagiarism. The free software system is shown to provide fast response times when run on a mid-range cluster computer. The system's automatic plagiarism detection system is shown to be able to detect multiple authors of course assignments when used to analyze the work of actual online students. Use of this system on a large scale would allow most colleges to reduce their faculty size by 20 to 40%.

Investigating the Status of Tablet Computers and E-Books Use of Open Education Faculty Students: A Case Study

Ömer Koçak (Üzümlü Vocational School, Erzincan University, Erzincan, Turkey), Önder Yildirim (Department of Computer and Instructional Technology Education, Erzincan University, Erzincan, Turkey), Engin Kursun (Department of Computer and Instructional Technology Education, Atatürk University, Erzurum, Turkey), Gürkan Yildirim (Department of Computer and Instructional Technology Education, Atatürk University, Erzurum, Turkey)

The increase in tablet computers and e-books use brings to mind the question of how users benefited from these technologies. In this sense, the present study investigated the status of students' tablet computers and e-books use and the reasons why students prefer to use and not use of tablet computers and e-books. Students' study habits while using e-books were also examined. In the study, which was designed as an instrumental case study, the data was obtained from 100 open education faculty students through semi-structured interview forms by making calls over the phone. In the analysis of the data, content analysis method was used. Results showed that the majority of the students stated that they use tablet computers and prefer e-books while studying. The main reasons why they prefer e-books are that they can be carried easily and studied everywhere. Considering the students' learning habits on e-books, four study habits were emerged. Interestingly, most of them study on tablets and take notes on a separate sheet. Eye fatigue and difficulty to edit the e-books are the main reasons of the students who preferred printed materials.

Study on an Interactive Truck Crane Simulation Platform Based on Virtual Reality Technology

Yong Sang (School of Mechanical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian City, China), Yu Zhu (School of Mechanical Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian City, China), Honghua Zhao (State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis for Industrial Equipment, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian City, China), Mingyan Tang (Department of Philosophy, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian City, China)

The modern web-based distance education overcomes space-time restriction of the traditional teaching forms. However, being short of specifically observable and operable experimental equipment makes the web-based education lack advantages in the knowledge learning progress, which needs strong stereoscopic effect and operability. Truck crane is the most widely used crane installed on ordinary or tailor-made chassis with strong operability. This paper introduces a kind of interactive truck crane simulation platform based on the virtual reality technology, on which can complete the simulation experiment of the crane's movement. The framework and working principle of the interactive truck crane simulation platform are discussed in the paper, while landing leg and hook are used as an example to show the motion control mechanism of truck crane components. The interactive truck crane simulation platform uses the browser-based structure, Java3D, virtual reality and Java Applet, etc. to develop a Web3D virtual reality learning environment, which has the advantages of good interaction, strong sense of reality, simple update, less investment and so on. This learning environment can meet the needs that many students study online at the same time, so it has important application in the distance education of mechanical profession and remote training of vocational skills.

Automatic Detection of Tutoring Styles Based on Tutors' Behavior

Safia Bendjebar (LabSTIC Laboratory, University 8 May 1945 Guelma, Guelma, Algeria), Yacine Lafifi (LabSTIC Laboratory, University 8 May 1945 Guelma, Guelma, Algeria), Amina Zedadra (LabSTIC Laboratory, University 8 May 1945 Guelma, Guelma, Algeria)

In e-learning systems, tutors have a significant impact on learners' life to increase their knowledge level and to make the learning process more effective. They are characterized by different features. Therefore, identifying tutoring styles is a critical step in understanding the preference of tutors on how to organize and help the learners. In this context, the authors address the problem of extracting tutoring styles from tutors' behavior. According to this later, tutors are classified automatically into their styles. This technique will be helpful to provide a suitable advice to learners. In the first step, a set of indicators are defined to characterize a tutoring style. In the second one, the accuracy between the tutoring styles obtained from the proposed approach and those defined from a simple questionnaire is investigated. To validate this approach, the authors have collected data from an on line tutoring system (LETline, http://www.labstic.com/letline). They present the results of their analysis and discuss some limitations that can be helpful to the researchers working in the tutoring field.
