Can machines learn from longitudinal patient records to predict whether
someone will develop breast cancer or prostate cancer? Can we automatically
discover diagnostic criteria to better distinguish between subtypes of
Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma? Can we integrate the mining of medical big data with
multiple modalities including clinical narratives, biomedical literature,
physiological time series and whole genome/exome sequencing, and can we use
the insights obtained from machine learning to suggest new interventions to
treat and prevent cancer onset altogether?

We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Health and
Biomedical Informatics at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of
Medicine. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to conduct research described
above, under guidance from Dr. Yuan Luo, Assistant Professor in Departments
of Preventive Medicine and (by courtesy) Industrial Engineering and
Management Science, as well as Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
The fellow will also have the opportunities to work closely with top-notch
clinicians from Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and strong supporting staff
from Northwestern Medicine Enterprise Data Warehouse Team.

The successful candidate will have PhD in Computer Science, Biomedical
Informatics or related fields with a focus on Machine Learning (ML) and/or
Natural Language Processing (NLP) and have strong publication record in
those fields. The candidate should have solid mathematical background and
analytical skills, with strong programming skills, including but not
limited to Python, Matlab, R and Java or C/C++. Practical expertise with
standard ML and NLP related tools are required. The candidate should
demonstrate good communication skills and ability to work in a
collaborative environment, to coordinate and supervise part of the research
project. Knowledge of network analysis, graph mining and stochastic
optimization is a plus.

We offer a competitive salary and an initial appointment of 12 or 24
months, starting Spring/Fall of 2016-2017. Extension of the postdoctoral
position for up to 3 years is possible. Northwestern University is an
exceptional research institution that has a world-class medical school and
is an emerging hub in biomedical informatics; our department is located in
downtown Chicago, one of the most vibrant cities in the US. Be part of a
prestigious institution that offers great benefits, and enjoy our lakefront
working environment.

Please send your application to Yuan Luo <yuan.luo at northwestern.edu>, which
should include:
